Lots of choices and it will be used mostly for boil in the bag meals and coffee. However, I wonder if one that adjustable is worth it?

Mostly truck adventuring and just because they’re cool.

I have a MSR Whisperlite that is a good unit once it gets going but I seem to spend more time tinkering than it’s worth. It was dads so I’ll keep it around, but looking for an easier solution.

I forget which one I have. I will have to look. A simple sterno stove, which I also have will do similar things. Not quite as quickly though Smile

Have you cleaned the jet and needle? Clean any deposits on the fuel cable...

I have one and it is AWESOME. Went camping a while back with my brother in-law and he had MSR. I was going instantly and had my dinner in half the time he did. He struggled a bit with the wind on his and the Jetboil was definitely more stable.

I think they are absolutely worth the extra money.

I have the one that has the heat indicator on the side. Once it turns color, you're good to go. Quick and easy.

I have, repair kit and all. It seems it needs service each time I use it. Probably because it doesn’t gets used enough.

I have the jet boil Zip. It is no frills, no igniter, less adjustment, etc.

I've used it for over a decade (?), and it just flat out works.

Nobody actually "cooks" on these, so the only reason you want one with the upgraded regulator is for "really" cold weather camping. I have many dozens, if not hundreds, of backpacking nights and I can probably count on two hands the times I've seen someone "cook" food on the trail on a stove of any sort. If anyone is cooking anything, it's gonna be over a fire.

By "cooking" I mean anything other than full blast boiling water or full blast frying something. Few people are going to simmer a soup or whatever you think you might need simmer control for.

The MSR Whisperlite shines at altitude, or if you plan to do 'some' actual cooking. The JetBoil shines when you just need to boil water. It's an awesome & reliable system, but locks you into canister fuel, which is also higher cost than white gas, plus you need to deal w/ the empties.

I have a Whisperlite that I've attempted, by mistake, to drown in oatmeal but with a bit of cleaning, it still functions just like new. I have nothing bad to say about it. Just keep it clean.

Now and with that said...

I now almost exclusively use the Soto WindMaster 4 flex propane stove. I have an MSR Pocket Rocket that is a little torch but the Soto gets used almost 100% of the time.

I'd go out of my way to find the WindMaster but if that wasn't possible and I needed a stove, I'd find a Pocket Rocket Deluxe and not the original or PR2.

The Soto is more refined stove with actual adjustments on the flame and it also comes with electronic ignition.

Love the Whisperlite but for weekend or week long, I'd use the WindMaster or PR. If I just wanted to boil water and didn't need finesse cooking, Whisperlite all the way.

I have a snowpeak and absolutely love it. Extremely light weight and have not had one problem (I've had it for about 11years). If I remember correctly quite a bit cheaper than the Jet Boil.

When we were kids, we made camp stoves out of tuna fish cans. Cut a long strip of cardboard the height of the tuna can. Roll it up tight and place it in the can and then pour paraffin wax in there. They burned forever. A whole lot cheaper too.

Still have some around somewhere. Just in case. You never know.

You can do the same with a clean 1 qt paint can (brand new from your home improvement or hardware store) a take the cardboard center out of roll of TP and stuff the roll inside.

Fill with 90% plus alcohol and light it. It does the same as your tuna can but on a bigger scale.

Put the lid on when you're done and reuse.

Yeah, but mine'll fit in your pocket. Razz

Sounds kind of cool though. Might have to build one of them.

Boy Scout winter camping! I ruined my mother’s double boiler melting the wax!

My 70ish year old Optimus 8R burns gasoline, white gas, diesel, alcohol (denatured and not), basically any liquid that volatilizes and combusts at a few hundred degrees.

Mother described it as “cooking with a blow torch.”

Not my stove, but same model

The last picture looks to be burning white gas.

I’ll look into a Jet Boil.

^ that’s cool!

I have an old Sears marked Coleman two burner white gas stove that works awesome for actually cooking eggs and pancakes on. It’s too big for what I need but fun.

I have this exact unit. Very nice to brew up a cup of coffee while out on a cold morning of duck hunting. It has a french press screen & everything, including the small gas can will fit inside of the cup. It can also just be used for boiling water. Boil indicator on side sleeve is nice, and only takes about a minute to boil.
