It’s only my opinion, I find veterans don’t talk much if any about their service, let alone drag up memories of combat. They are a quiet bunch.

There are other reasons why veterans don’t talk about their military service much, but one of the main reasons is because very few of those who aren’t veterans (or maybe professional historians) really care. If anyone was truly interested in aspects of what I did and experienced in the Army, I’d be happy to discuss it with them. But most people, especially those who were never in the armed forces themselves, don’t understand, have little if any interest in understanding, and ultimately couldn’t understand.

When talking to people it’s very easy to see that disinterest just as it’s easy to see that they don’t want to hear about the fish someone caught, a clueless boss, or the strange dream involving black flags and unicorns.

It doesn’t take long to think, Yeah, I’m boring you; “How ’bout them Cubs?”

(And that’s not to say there’s aren’t exceptions. They’re the guys who tell the same stories over and over about making coffee in number 10 cans, how much time they spent in “the field,” how they manipulated the system to get out of Korea early, or putting the new clueless LT in his place. Usually they just tell those stories to other vets—but not always.)

I'd be more accepting of former neonazi, tatted up convict than I would be of an active lier. Someone who admits their past grievances, accepts responsibility, makes restitution if possible, and is looking to start fresh would be welcome in my church (if I had one).

People get second chances. He's not able to get a second chance because he is still actively deceiving your congregation.

Totally agree. I would be really worried about this guy being a scammer. I'm fine with a truly repentant soul who wants to believe and worship.
