Receivers don’t have tone controls?
I think my hearing is changing with age. I was looking to augment higher frequencies on my receiver to compensate. But there are no tone controls in the setup menu. Only level setting per channel. I assume the mic based auto config adjust for tone as well as volume per channel. But I can’t figure out how to manually adjust tone.

There are tone buttons on the front panel but when I press them, it indicates that the controls are not available. Not sure why.

Still checking the manual but can’t find any clarification yet.

Is this typical for ‘modern’ AV receivers?

Tone controls are on the preamp nowadays.

But this is a receiver (= preamp + amp) so it should allow for tone control, right?

I never noticed as I’ve never really used tone controls; I usually operate with flat settings or even bypass tone controls if the unit allowed. This is the first time I’m wanting to use tone controls. Something so simple yet I can’t figure it out. I feel stupid.

What receiver is it? Depending on what it is, it may have active room correction after you calibrate it. It's possible you can't use the tone controls unless you disable room correction. But you may be able to select a different target curve for the room correction which may help.

I uses Denon AVR's with Audyssey MultiQ XT32. With room correction enabled I can choose between the standard curve or "flat". I prefer flat because there is a bit more high end clarity.

Integra 50.6.

I tried disabling the auto room correction but still couldn’t find a way to adjust treble. The manual online sucks.

It's in there. It won't let you futz with it if the mode is set to 'THX' or 'Direct'.

Page 12 of your basic manual under 'step 3: playing back' says at the bottom left:

Adjusting Sound Quality: It is possible to enhance or moderate the bass and treble of front speakers. Press Tone on the main unit several times to select the desired setting from "Bass", "Treble", and "Phase Matching Bass", and ! $<% It cannot be set if the listening mode is Direct, or THX."Bass": Allows you to enhance or moderate the bass."Treble": Allows you to enhance or moderate the treble."Phase Matching Bass": Allows you to keep the clear midrange and effectively enhance the bass.

I can't help but smile. I have to keep you in mind when I have some out of the way esoteric question.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
