Yes, algae and debris has always been a major concern with the pool

No one really said anything when former Pres. Obama spent 34 million on a restoration project and a short time later it was filled with algae.

Last week, I did a little research and these were the top highlights over the years.


1978 – The pool is being cleaned twice annually, with 10 to 15 large truckloads of debris removed at each cleaning, the National Park Service reports.

1981 – A full reconstruction is undertaken to address water leakage and drainage, with "self-sustaining" methods introduced to maintain the appearance.

1986 – An engineering report concludes the pool’s structural system is failing.

July 2008 - The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports: "The Reflecting Pool is stagnant and full of muck. The thick layer of algae on the pool and ponds is hard to miss, especially the smell.”

December 2009 – Park service issues 209-page report on the pool, considers reconstruction alternatives for the pool, including using “proprietary biological chemicals to abate algae growth,” adding continuous water turnover to inhibit algae accumulation or ozone filtration to inhibit algae growth.

November 2010 – Construction begins on project to update the pool, prone to leaking, holding stagnant water and taking nearly 20 to 30 million gallons of city water a year to refill.

September 2012 – Days after the $34 million restoration project is complete, the pool fills with algae, USA TODAY and the Washington Post reported. When the renovations were complete, a company involved with the project wrote that the newer, more sustainable pool could last another century with less maintenance required.

June 2017 – Pool is drained to control a parasite outbreak that killed more than 80 ducks and ducklings, USA TODAY reported.

May 2019 – Park Service begins draining the pool to repair a broken water line, which compromised circulation and led to water quality issues, including algae growth and a green tint to the water.

Seems like its been a money pit since 1923.
Maybe its time to re-think it and start over with something that will work.
A 2000'+ long open body of stagnant water that is open to the public, 24-7, seems like a sanitation nightmare.
I'm sure if chemicals were dumped into it to help clear up algae the public would scream about health hazards even though it would probably be no different than a hotel pool.
A water circulation system would ruin the reflection part of the pool.

It’s tougher than a hotel pool because its function, reflecting, is at odds with filtration. Good filtration requires the water to be moving while still water is best for reflecting.

Make it a saltwater pool.

Thank you to all those who responded. It appears based on what was presented, that the pool being filled with water from the Potomac is likely a cause of algae blooms that occur each time it's refilled.

Perhaps they could filter during the non-daylight hours (sunset to sunrise), and either chlorinate it, or make it a saltwater pool. Of course, it would need to be vacuumed by an army of pool boys, or maybe robotic vacuums on a regular basis as well.

Fountains run at night would help drastically with oxygen exchange, and algae reduction. Fountains are used in ponds for this very reason, not so much for looks.

Stop filling it with Potomac River water to start with, and then you need a filtration system that can move water through filters.

Otherwise it's stagnant pool of water and algae will always be an issue without lots of chemical added to combat it.

Would take a shit load of Chlorine to keep it clean.
