Already reported that the "tip" came from the McDonald's employee that recognized him from published pictures. I'd speculate that it was someone who thought he was "cute."

Slightly off topic and not intended to derail the thread, but with the increasing prevalence of surveillance technology, getting away with public acts of crimes must be quite a challenge. Shades of Hollywood movies in real life. Whether or not this is a good thing overall deserves some thought, but we, as a society, better get used to constant individual observation no matter how innocent our behavior. And, inevitably, it will lead to more and more things becoming illegal due to the ease of picking low hanging fruit.

I have been providing United Health insurance to my employees and myself for the last 6 or 7 years. They have been the best value and provided the best service of all the options available to me. I may not be happy with the price, but they have done well be us. I do not think that shooting the CEO of a company that you are unhappy with is something that should be encouraged or allowed. If this was some sort of honor killing or grand political statement then the gunman would have stayed to face the music. This is a crime, nothing more.

The man in Altoona is alleged to have a gun similar to the one used in the CEO's murder, according to sources.

Authorities are questioning a man in Altoona, Pa., in connection with the UnitedHealthcare CEO’s fatal shooting that took place outside a Manhattan hotel on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. The man was taken for questioning in a McDonald’s after a patron tipped authorities, the New York Times reported.

The early-morning killing of Brian Thompson has stumped authorities and captivated the general public as more details of the shooting have come to light. Ammunition used in the shooting had “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” written in permanent marker; a backpack believed to belong to the suspect was found with Monopoly money inside; and the weapon used may have been a “veterinary pistol” used to put down animals without causing loud noise.

That final detail is what drew authorities to Pennsylvania. The man in Altoona is alleged to have a gun similar to the one used in Thompson’s murder, according to various news outlets. The New York Times reported the man being questioned came to the attention of police via tip and presented police with a fake ID allegedly used by the suspected shooter to check into a hostel more than a week before the murder.

To date, authorities believe the shooter acted alone.

The shooter waited for Thompson, who was in town for his company’s annual investor conference, and shot him around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday before fleeing on bike into Central Park. By 7:30 a.m., authorities believe the shooter made it to the George Washington Bridge Bus Station by taxi. The station offers bus routes to Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington, as well as commuter service to New Jersey. New York City police believe the gunman left the city by bus.

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch called the shooting outside the New York Hilton Midtown a “premeditated, preplanned, targeted attack.” Authorities believe the gunman arrived in the city 10 days before the shooting, in a bus that originated in Atlanta. Police said the suspect would go on to stay in a hostel with a fake ID and pay in cash.

New York City police have released various images of the suspected shooter in his hostel, a taxi, and Starbucks to no avail. A fingerprint found at a Starbucks where the shooter is believed to have bought a water and energy bar has also proven to be a dead end.

The FBI is offering $50,000 for information leading to the suspect’s arrest and conviction, while the NYPD is offering a $10,000 reward.

The pistol, a 9mm, was described at the press conference as a ghost gun and the mayor and the NYPD made remarks which would lead the uninformed to believe that the entire pistol was printed on a 3d printer, rather than just the frame and some small components.

I can see us eventually getting to a point where slides and barrels are serialized and controlled, just as frames/receivers are right now.
