Not to intrude on the other freezer post. We would like to have a small freezer, specifically for meat, perhaps some other frozen foods. The only room we have for one is on the covered porch, southern exposure, so daylight sun. Protected from the rain and snow, but exposed to outside temperatures. We live at 5000' in the Black Hills. Thoughts, concerns, viability? Thanks in advance! Jim

Hell, that's the way we do it in the South. Freezers, old couches, grandma, GTG.

Check with your homeowner's insurance. Mine had a huge problem with a freezer outside for some asinine reason. That said however, the freezers worked great outside! At different times I had both a chest freezer and an upright, and neither had issues with Middle Tennessee weather. "The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people." "Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy." "I did," said Ford, "it is." "So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?" "It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want." "You mean they actually vote for the lizards." "Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course." "But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?" "Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

You sit on the porch on the couch with Memaw and shell your purple hull peas over a five gallon bucket. Fill up quart bags and put them in the freezer. It's more efficient having the freezer on the porch, speeds up production. Quart jars of sweet tea and a few sleeping dogs rounds out the picture.

If the freezer is outside in hot and sunny weather, it will have to work a lot harder to keep the contents frozen. If it is already cold outside, it will have to work less. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

My folks had THREE freezers on their car port. They had them there for years with no problem. 2 of them were filled with game meat, the 3rd was veggies from their garden. About 1971-72 we built a second house and were looking for a cheap refrigerator for it. A friend found an elderly lady with one that had been sitting on her porch for a few years, was still working quite well. Long story short, we acquired it and put it in that house we were building. We turn it off every time we come back home from there. All these years later it is still working just fine. It is one of those 2 compartment styles, one for freezer stuff, the other is normal refrigerator. And stack a month's worth of laundry in front of it to help keep the sun off of it. Also, stringing a clothes line full of drying clothes across the porch will help as well. Welcome to Squalor Hollow.

I'd suggest against it. Domestic freezers are not made to be outside. UV plays hell on the gasket and plastic parts, rain or wetness may cause a shock hazard or trip GFI's. __________________________ Writing the next chapter that I've been looking forward to.

Always had a freezer and fridge both in a garage. But wouldn't get as cold here as you do. Just below freezing in winter and over 100 in the summer at times here, but with no direct sun. Several years old, 15 or more, and still working perfect. The freezer specs should provide a min and max operating environment temp spec. Collecting dust.

My Mom had a fridge and a chest freezer in her garage for years, temps swung from 90's to 20 below zero, no problems. _________________________________________________ "Once abolish the God, and the Government becomes the God." --- G.K. Chesterton

I would do it here in western Illinois, but you are just inside the artic circle. If you were at 1200 ft elevation I'd say give it a try. Safety, Situational Awareness and proficiency. Neck Ties, Hats and ammo brass, Never ,ever touch'em w/o asking first
