His Royal Hiney![]() |
I saw a tv segment a long time ago that was about a couple who lived in a missile silo they bought. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

Hmmm... I wonder if our friends the Rooskies remembered to delete your newly purchased Silo from their circa 1962 target database. You might skate on a mutual exchange but your neighborhood would not. Be hard on your free range chickens, too. End of Earth: 2 Miles Upper Peninsula: 4 Miles

Hmmm... 85,000 SIGforum members, times $8 a member, comes to $680,000... which is the price of one of the options posted... Hmmm... H&K-Guy

That's probably Ed Peden outside Topeka KS. It's an Atlas E complex, not a "genuine" silo. The missile is stored horizontally and raised to vertical before launch. Ed lives in the control center which barely below ground level. Believe it or not...$360k is actually a pretty good price for a Titan 2 ![]() Even better with the fact that appears to not have been flooded. The "standard procedure" if you will, when they were demilled, the top 10+ or so feet of the access shaft and silo were blown off and generally filled with rubble so the were no longer "usable", and then buried with topsoil. The access shaft looks like it has already been eather built back up, or had minimal demo done before it was buried and the steel cover has been added after it was opened. Big plus as their is generally just a big hole when you get done digging ![]() The silo on the other hand still has not been opened. Their is a pic of a tunnel with a large pile of dirt spilling out, that is the access tunnel to the silo which I want to say is maybe 30ish feet or so below original ground level. A lot of digging their if you want that opened back up lol. This guy wasn't quite as lucky when he bought his a few year ago. This is still a on going project but it can give you a general idea of what you could be starting with. https://www.youtube.com/channe...os?disable_polymer=1 And just for kicks, if you happened to have around $1 million or so just laying around and want a bit more room to work with, a Titan 1 would be what you would want to look for. Here is a really nice tour of one of those. The top 5 videos are of the base. https://www.youtube.com/channe...jj2ZvSXbqrCOA/videos ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

If you want to waste a few hours (ok, waste a *lot* of hours) look up "death wears bunny slippers" on youtube. It's a series of videos showing a guy's effort to rehab a Titan II silo in Arkansas. After a while, you come to the conclusion that it would be faster, safer, and cheaper to start a new silo from scratch. === I would like to apologize to anyone I have *not* offended. Please be patient. I will get to you shortly.

I wonder if building your home brew silo would trigger some sort of arms race. Ruskies: "What's this new activity at (insert GPS coordinates)" USAF: "That's just SIGForum building their cubhouse." Ruskies: "SIGForum? What happened to Space Force?"

All of the Titan II site were on commercial power. There was a 350kw generator on level 3 of the silo equipment area for backup power in event of commercial power loss. There was a 8,000 gallon diesel tank buried topside, and a 2,500 gallon tank in the silo. This silo is in Arizona, so it is dry. A few years ago, as noted above, a guy bought a Titan silo in Arkansas and opened it----full of water. As a side note the actual silo at the Titan site were demolished (explosives) for the upper three levels, and debris & dirt filled. The missile sites that are still intact only contain the access portal, control center, and the long cableway (tunnel) that leads to the silo. The only exception to this is the museum in Green Valley, AZ. The guy in Arkansas has several videos posted of his project: https://www.youtube.com/channe...FemVufSvDgkCQ/videos Video example: My first assignment in the AF 1982-1985 was Titan II crew. Titan had 4 man crews: Commander--Officer (1st Lt./Capt.) Deputy Commander--Officer (2nd Lt./1st Lt.) Missile Technician-(me) Enlisted (A1C-SSgt) Facilities Technician--Enlisted (A1C-SSgt) Duty was 24 hours on/48 hours off. You could sleep on your shift, but 2 personnel had to be awake at all times 2 man policy and all.

The first generation ICBMs (Atlas D/E/F and Titan I) had different configurations, Atlas F had a silo with connected launch control center (LCC). A Titan I complex was HUGE, with three silos, LCC, and a large generator facility. Those liquid fuel missiles were all shut down by mid-1965, the silos were left as is though most are now filled with water. There were no treaty requirements. Titan II sites were closed and deactivated sometime in the 80s IAW a SALT or START treaty, eager guys have opened some up. Each Minuteman LCC had ten remote silos per LCC. In the 90s USAF closed about 500 of them, and like Titan II a treaty required they be deactivated silos were imploded. This guy dug out a Minuteman LCC: https://www.kansascity.com/new...article51280515.html

It's a bit remote. Plus, I suspect running power lines to your top-secret, hidden missile bunker might be a dead giveaway to spy satellites. Would need to generate power from local resources. From the location, I'd bet they had a state of the art scorpion-and-tarantula fueled generator system. ![]()

I see these and I always wonder, somewhere in Russia is there an ICBM directly pointed at my home if I buy one of these? Seems like fun but I imagine the heating bill might suck!
