“A mother who was home with her children when a burglar broke in shot at the man, wounding him and forcing him to flee.

The woman was holed up in a bedroom in her home with her children when she took aim at the would-be intruder, according to law enforcement in Texas.

In a statement, the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office said that the mother warned the intruder that she was armed and that she had dialed 911.

The incident occurred on October 25 in Edinburg, Texas, around 9 p.m. close to the southern border. The town is part of the Rio Grande Valley region.

The incident occurred on October 25 in Edinburg, Texas, around 9 p.m. close to the southern border. The town is part of the Rio Grande Valley region.

The press release said that the suspect, later named as 36-year-old Carlos Garcia, 'Refused to leave and continued to try and get into the bedroom.' He had entered the house through the garage.

The mother pulled the trigger once through the door, causing Garcia to flee, police said. He was hit once in the left arm. Shortly after authorities got to the home, they located Garcia in a field around 100 yards from the house.

……

Followers of the sheriff's office's Facebook page praised the mom's actions.

One person wrote: 'Great job protecting your kids. Glad to hear all is well. Your children will remember this and be proud of your courage to protect them and your home.'
……

While another had a message for Texas Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Beto O'Rourke saying: 'So you going to try and convince this woman to do the buy back program and try to tell her that she shouldn’t own the very gun that protected not only herself but her kids? …”

So it is clear on the 911 tape that you warned the attacker that police are en route, you are armed, and that you’ll defend yourself. Then the three shots you fire in a perfect 0.89 second Mozambique from your 10mm SIG are also recorded and come as no surprise to anyone other than the attacker.

I’m with ya. The last thing the bad guy should hear is the snap of a safety and then a boom.

Is there some rule that says you gotta try and reason with criminals? When I was a cop we were told to give verbal warnings..and I guess that was probably more there for the city attorney…but you can best believe those rules no longer apply to me now that I’m retired.

Probably because they don't want to have to shoot someone.

Even ignoring any morality qualms, shooting someone will never be a happy experience, and unless it’s an active killer in the kindergarten, we probably won’t even get any “Attaboy” praise. Giving warnings before shooting, if possible and appropriate to the situation, may also be a benefit from a liability standpoint. Although it doesn’t apply to private individuals, it’s even mandated by law for Colorado peace officers.

Probably because they don't want to have to shoot someone.

This, in spades. Possibly ending even a shitty life would be extraordinarily hard for the average person to resort to. Also, a “warned” person might think twice about driving home an attack to which there is no guarantee of a favorable outcome for the defender.

What no warning shot??? How dare the woman for shooting without a warning shot!! .............. You play stupid games then you might win some prize that you did not want.... Give this woman a medal for protecting her children as well as her self.. Now what about the judicical side of this story... Will the intruder be prosecuted and sentenced to a long lengthly sentence or will he be let off with a slap on the wrist and told to go forth and behave themselves and sin no more. ......................... drill sgt.

No warning needed anywhere in TX, although I agree with above about not wanting to take another person's life.

I was told about another similar Texican incident in which a lone woman shot the BG, only this time he collected the bullet through the left ear as he snuck into the kitchen via the back door. Needless to say, it was terminal.

The brave lady who ended his criminal career of ten years and over a hundred entries on his sheet HAD actually issued him with a verbal warning, but, as she told the sheriff after the event, she'd actually whispered it real quiet because she hand't wanted to wake up the baby.
