I am giving a speech on this subject and curious as to what parents advice I can use in my speech. It is to school kids.

I guess it would depend on the age of the children. My young children knew that we seek the police out for help and can be relied up to render aid.

My children who are now teens get the speech regarding interactions where they may be around groups of people where police action/intervention is warranted and how they are to comport themselves. I go over different scenarios and what their rights/appropriate response to commands are.

My 18 year old is getting the "You are now an adult going off to college speech"

Fortunately I have good kids who have good friends and have made (mostly) good choices. All my talks with them are generally what to do if they are somehow in a group where the police are forced to give general commands.

--Comply with their orders
--If a traffic stop, you DO NOT know why you were stopped
--Do not have even one drink if you are going to drive
--Do not consent to a search of your vehicle
--If other than a routine traffic stop, ask for a lawyer and state that you are exercising your right to remain silent. Then SHUT UP.
--Call me ASAP.

Depends on the kids' ages. Young: Police are your friends. You can trust them and must respect them. Teens: Always do what the police tell you to and treat them with respect. You should limit your voluntary interactions; never consent to any searches. Older teems: Do what you're told, be respectful, do not answer questions that are part of an investigation (except a traffic stop).

I've told my boys to expect to be pulled over for trivial things. Us males, especially when just starting out, tend to do stupid things, some of which are illegal. A cop would rather do paperwork on something big, so they will pull over those who statistically will yield a better return on effort.

Beyond that, I say don't argue, cooperate, and follow directions.

And remember, kids... If you see 5-0, warn everyone.


Several years ago, I approached a house trying to make contact with a certain person who lived there. I knocked on the front door, and the door was promptly answered by a ~4 year old shirtless kid. His eyes got really big, then he turned and loudly called out over his shoulder "Oh shit! It's the cops!"

(That tells you the kind of family I was dealing with, for the toddler to be the one answering the door, and for that to be his immediate reaction. How many times had he heard that phrase before?)

Another one not mentioned above is the officers should be addressed as Sir or Ma'am. Stay civil and respectful, you can work out issues later if there are any.

If the cops have to chase you down they are bringing an ass whooping with them!!

I tell my kids to be respectful, if driving then hands on the wheel visible, no sudden movements, the police officer has a job to do.

Other then that: threat them with respect, be honest, don't bullshit them.

My kid and his ride was widely known by my co-workers and I offered a steak dinner to any of them who could catch his ass doing anything. And the kid was fully aware of the bounty on him.
Worked out pretty well.
To the kid I said: If stopped, be polite and and keep your mouth shut.

Something like:

1. Avoid them if at all possible.
2. Be politely, succinctly, uncooperative if you must interact.
3. Like Human Resources, remember - they are not your friend.
4. Wash your hands immediately after any interactions, because cooties/bedbugs.
5. Protect your dogs, friends, vehicles, and property at all costs - most "just want to get home".

How'd I do?

Yes sir officer, no sir office, do what your told, have our lawyers deal with it. Do not consent to being searched.
