Nothing? And why not just put food in the garbage? Ants, and if you live in an area with racoons, coyotes, dogs, bears, they get the scent of the food and you are cleaning up the street at 4am after they have a nice repast ala garbage' It's a "garbage" disposal, not an amusing attachment that makes noise at the push of the button I run just about every food product through it and zero issues with clogs down line and I've been on septic and city sewer without issue. The things that can cause problems are rocks, glass, plates, silverware doesn't like it.

To quote the great Joe Biden..."sonofabitch" I got it freed up and sounding pretty good. Moen doesn't have an allen wrench hole in the bottom, you have to have a super special tool to stick down the throat and twist. Well, the handles of a large pair of channellocks fit down in there and got it to spin. I put some ice cubes in it and let it run a bit with the water running. I'll run it every day or two and see what happens.

You can put damn near anything down one, but most stuff will clog your pipes or the machine unless it’s a Waste Kang. My dad was a plumber and we had one in two homes but they don’t have on in the newest one. Dad says mom was running potato skins nd he got tired of unclogging it, so he removed it and the new house didn’t get one. We don’t use ours. If it hadn’t been already installed I wouldn’t have one. I can scrape the dishes off at the trash. Also if you are on a septic, some stuff will clog the red basket that’s inside the tank. The system is designed for sewage not food scraps. And you should be using rid-X often to introduce bacteria to gobble up the solids. “You may beat me, but you will never win.” sigmonkey-2020 “ in my opinion, anything that we can do to trigger a potential aneurysm in a leftist is a good thing and worth doing” nhtagmember 2025

Same. The only thing I don't put down there are banana peels. ___________________________________________ "Why is it every time I need to get somewhere, we get waylaid by jackassery?" -Dr. Thaddeus Venture

Do NOT put eggshells, bones, pepper seeds, or anything else that is not biodegradable down a disposal especially if you are on a septic system. They take forever to break down cause problems in the septic system. If you put potato skins down one, use cold water and only a few at a time as the heat and starch will clog up the pipes. I've been on a septic system for over 65 years and have learned how to avoid most issues. Under Construction

Well I can say don't put apple peelings in it because my girlfriend plugged up the pipes. The sink wouldn't drain and she ran the disposal until it burned up the seals and started leaking out the bottom. Now I need a new one. I pulled the PVS pipes and cleaned them out. Clogged solid with apple peels.

Get a Binford, like Tim the Toolman! We really don’t put much down it. It’s nice for the little bit of stuff that comes off dishes during hand washing or rinsing prior to the dishwasher. Never potato skins and similar. We do grind up eggshells in it, seems like we need to stop that. If it fails or leaks, we won’t replace it as little as we use it. Scrape most of the leftovers off of the dishes into the trash, then quickly rinse off whatever remains into the sink. Then put the dishes in the dishwasher. The disposal will turn those little bits into smaller bits so that your drain/sewer/septic system can more easily deal with them. I do believe this helps keep the home's pipes and septic running cleaner. Imo, the disposal is not for large amounts of leftovers. Even if it is soft like spaghetti or mashed potatoes. All that stuff will have to be decomposed somewhere, either in your septic system or the city's waste water treatment plant. Be sure to hit the RUN button to clear it out before your run the dishwasher.

I have a septic system, and I put essentially nothing through my garbage disposal. It makes my life go so much smoother.
