Double action revolver is a best choice over any single action, and the heaviest caliber/bullet combo you can handle. Bullets suited for Elephant seem about right. Remember, these beasts are defensive tackle fast, so practice a draw and one with one hand. Face to face with a bull Moose on a wilderness trail is nearly as scary...unpredictable are both creatures.

A Kodiak Brown Bear that grew up feasting on salmon and other bush meats is a true force of nature. Have you seen one up close, say within 30 feet? These guys are HUUUGE APEX Predators and they know it. No need for any help pinching a hard loaf in the woods when one of them shows up sniff'n around.

These beasts just may go belly up and die right there on the spot in front of you from laughter at the sight of your tiny, cute, little .44 Mag. Wheely Gun.

A high powered rifle would be the way to go, if they don't go all full-house ninja on you first. The Rifle/Pistol debate is simply a power/size debate in disguise. So there you have it, 'n' stuff.

For a true Kodiak Griz, I'd go with a 300 Win Mag or higher. In fact, I'd get the most powerful rifle I could carry, even if it says "Howitzer" stamped on the side of the barrel.

And for those that work around those Polar Bears in the Arctic, well, I got nuth'n. 'Cause you ain't never gonna' see me up in those parts.

Or, nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

We used to issue our guys on the Polar Star and Polar Sea(huge icebreakers where scientists might encounter bears) an H&H 375 Magnum ...the course for qualification was five rounds on a transtar II target (Man sized shape target) in one minute (prerequisite was to be qualified on the M16 rifle) they also issued Remington 870 with slugs.

I believe you are talking Polar Bear Territory up where you are ice breaking. I've seen the paw of one of those monsters on a side of a ship next to someones head. He could have torn off that guys head and used it for a racquet ball for him and his friends in a split second if he wanted to.

Did you see the footage here (I think in this thread?) of the smaller sized Grizz taking the full ride on a shotgun slug. It tipped over a little, got up, and decided to wander off. No harm, no foul, I guess. If it were me with that puny scatter gun, I'd be pump'n on it like a masturbating orangutan in heat at a Liberace concert. But that's just me.

Mike, these guys scare the crap out of me, and I mean that in the not so sanitary way.

Nope! And Hell Nope!

LOL. Quote of the day. I have to come up with a way to work that into casual conversation with my shooting buddies

Since this thread has gone off the rails regarding revolver...

We are going to Alaska shortly and will be camping remotely for an extended time.
After researching which gun to bring and what ammo to use I felt the only option for me was a 12 ga. With Brenneke slugs...

At under 50 yards, which any defensive shot will be, it’s hard to get more firepower down range than this.

What caliber gun can you put 6 rounds on target if the target is running your way? That’s the one you carry, the one you shoot well.

Sure you can. The same company makes the "Magnum Crush" 12 ga slug, heavier and more powerful that the famous slug you mention. Even better, and 375 H&H, which has more power (with a sturdy bullet of course), and less recoil than s breneke slug. BTW I LOVE Breneke slugs, they are the only slugs I use when deer hunting where black bears live. You won't find the Magnum Crush in stores like the other Brennek slugs, most people probably couldn't handle them. But any experienced shooter should handle them find, like any medium bore mangnum rifle. But for the economics of the situataion, and 12 ga shotty with Brenneke slugs is about as good as it gets. VERY smart choice using any Breneke slug. This is my personal setup: Benelli Super Black Eagle 12 ga semiauto, 24 inch rifled slug barrel (special order, requires a second special order fore end to fit the stupid rifled barrel), xtra strong recoil spring from gunsprings.com, fast sights of your choice. THAT is a good camp gun for bears, none better short of a mediuim bore heavy rifle. This is the combination I hunt deer with in black bear areas. My GUESS is that a close range shot in the chest of a Griz could make an initial first impression, or in my case, a Black. But for camp any 12 ga of any kind will do of course. Great choice on your part for Breneke slugs versus traditional pumpkin ball slugs with soft lead slugs that flatten out and break up on the first hard thing they hit. Fine for deer but I'd never use regular slugs on any dangerous game. Brenekes rule in this department. That sounds like a great time BTW, very cool.

I'd save the 20 ounces and carry a Glock 20 10mm if you will already have a rifle in your hands.

If you didn't already have a rifle in your hands, then yeah, get a revolver.

Both S&W and Ruger make 10mm revolvers, catalog and advertie them anyway. I would pick the Glock though. Also rumors are some
10mm is loaded light, not much more than 40 S&W energy levels

Planning a long camp trip in northern Montana, my anti-gun dad is agitating me to carry a rifle. Guess he looked into it. 12-gauge pump shotgun with slugs for a bear which can leap 50 yards in 2.5 seconds seems best, but the best protection is that which you'll be carrying.

Is S&W .357 Magnum" the same .357 Magnum? Just making the distinction from .357 SIG or perhaps a nod to S&W's contribution?
