Hi all. I’m a few years away from retirement. I’m thinking of buying a winter home in the general area of Tucson. I need some advice of what are good areas vs bad stay away from areas. I’m curious about south of Tucson around Green Valley. But everything I’ve looked at online is a CCR HOA neighborhood, I’d like to avoid that if possible. Any advice, comments, thoughts etc in a radius of maybe 45 miles of Tucson is wanted. I’m not set on Tucson, I just want to spend winters in a pleasant sunny warm-ish environment in Arizona. Some of my hobbies are photography, astronomy and ham radio. If you want to email me directly my email is in my profile. Thanks!

hello darkness my old friend |
South Tucson is pretty much a shit hole. Green valley is a ways from south Tucson and is generally pretty nice area. Many of the areas in Tucson are dark and unlit from street lights to limit light pollution for the local telescopes and that can be a bit of a problem for leo's. I haven't lived in Tucson in twenty years but my family is still there and there is a lot of crime. There are some retirement communities on the NW side in the oro valley area and that was a pretty nice area.

You're going to feel a little pressure... |
My friend just bought a house in Green Valley but they don't move in until the summer so no scouting report. Why Tucson? Why not Flagstaff? Hell, why not Vegas? Bruce "The designer of the gun had clearly not been instructed to beat about the bush. 'Make it evil,' he'd been told. 'Make it totally clear that this gun has a right end and a wrong end. Make it totally clear to anyone standing at the wrong end that things are going badly for them. If that means sticking all sort of spikes and prongs and blackened bits all over it then so be it. This is not a gun for hanging over the fireplace or sticking in the umbrella stand, it is a gun for going out and making people miserable with." -Douglas Adams “It is just as difficult and dangerous to try to free a people that wants to remain servile as it is to try to enslave a people that wants to remain free." -Niccolo Machiavelli The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. It's been almost 30 years since I lived in Tucson, so my information is more than a little outdated. At the time, however, South Tucson was to be avoided. We lived in Oro Valley and then Marana. I loved both. It was my favorite place I've ever lived, and I've gotten around a good bit. J Rak Chazak Amats

This is the growth area where all the services and retailers are building. Majority of residents are snowbirds from other parts of the country. Tucson is one of the most lefty communities in AZ, congratulations on your upcoming retirement and hats-off in trying to stem the Red-Tide and bring balance to the area.

Learning Spanish may be beneficial before your move. The City of Tucson is considered a sanctuary city. The city council leans very left. If people would mind their own damn business this country would be better off. I owe no one an explanation or an apology for my personal opinion.

Thanks for all of you for chiming in. I live in OKC and will keep my home and legal residence here. I hate the winters here, we don’t get much snow but we get ice storms and sometimes Zero degree temps. It’s very windy and when it’s cold the windchill sucks. I will be wintering in a warmer sunnier location. Why Tucson? Why not Flagstaff? Hell, why not Vegas? Tucson seemed like a good place for the winter. Flagstaff winters can brutal, I’ve got no desire to spend my winters with blizzards and feets of snow. Vegas is nice and fun to visit but I don’t want to winter there. Check Sierra Vista., in Cochise County. Excellent place to live. Thank you, will do, looks interesting. That’s far enough away yet still reasonably close for good healthcare and the airport. I may be in Southern AZ next month, I’ll check out Marana. I had lunch in Marana last October but didn’t stay to look around. I’m wondering about Buckeye, west of Phoenix. I’ve spent the night there a couple times the last couple years, seemed nice for what little I saw. I don’t want to have a place in such a big city as Phoenix and Buckeye is far enough west to miss it, yet still close enough for top notch medical as well as an airport. When I want to go someplace I like being not too far from an airport. Thanks!

Sierra Vista has an excellent hospital and most medical specialists. SV has a commercial airport as well. Very mild winters and summers are dry and seldom get to 100, but it's a dry heat. http://www.sierravistaaz.gov/c...ublic-works/airport/ If you're goin' through hell, keep on going. Don't slow down. Summer temperatures can reach 105+ in the Tucson metro. As pointed out, South Tucson is a shit hole. Tucson inner city is crime ridden with a shortage of Police officers. Homeless pandhandling on every major street cornet. Tucson residents are city taxed on all utilities. Marana and Oro valley is nice but expensive. Sierra Vista is very nice but close to the border. Phoenix is BIG and commuter traffic is crazy. Summer temperatures can reach 116 degrees. Did mention the heat in Southern Arizona? ********* "Some people are alive today because it's against the law to kill them".

Marana or Oro Valley is where you want to be. Easy access to shopping, recreation, shooting ranges. Head out to nearby Avra Valley for astronomy, or up to Mount Lemmon. The Saguaro National Forest is west of Tucson, and can provide plenty for your photography appetite. South on I-19 is Patagonia, well known for birdwatching. I would stay out of the city of Tucson. North Scottsdale is absolutely beautiful from September through May! Nearby communities such as Carefree and Cave Creek are very pleasant and real estate is a bit more affordable. "I'm not fluent in the language of violence, but I know enough to get around in places where it's spoken."

So true! It was 119 in the shade when we were in Arizona a few years ago. I thought we were being slow roasted. However, since Gene's looking for a winter home, the historical averages in the Tucson area between December and March are highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s, with an average of about an inch of rain per month during that period. Looks like November and early April generally have highs in the 70s if you want to stretch your stay to take advantage of those temps, too. *** "Aut viam inveniam aut faciam (I will either find a way or make one)." -- Hannibal Barca
