joatmonv1st shift, here I come
After 16 years on 2nd shift, I have been paroled to 1st.
December 2nd will be my first day and I'm like a kid on Christmas morning. It has been a long time and I've missed a lot since 2003.
I was there when my daughter was growing up but missed baseball games she was in. Missed plays she was in and other things. Did the best I could considering my work schedule.
Couldn't do things with friends most of the time during the week because I was working.
Missed bike nights at some places in the Summer because I was at work.
Really looking forward to this.
I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I'm not.

slabsides45Congrats on getting your life back. I can't imagine working that long on 2nd shift!

H&K-GuyI worked 2nd shift for 10 years. All I can say, is Welcome To Daylight, brother! You know what I'm talking about? That big ball of gas up in the sky. It's awesome.
Welcome home!

BeancookerCongrats bro!!!
That’s awesome news. It’s part of why I moved to AZ. Needed a job in the daytime hours.

1s1kI worked 2nd shift for 5 years when I was single. It's real easy to fall into drinking too much and sleeping too much when you also work with 30 other single guys with the same hours.
I could never do it with kids.

41Congratulations
I can't imagine working 2nd shift all the time.
Any shift work is hard on your health. At DuPont in the summer during my college years, I worked shift work but it was rotated weekly. We would get off the night shift and eat breakfast and then hunt ground hogs in the afternoon. You never got use to the rotation but it was not as bad as the 12 hour days working after college for two years.

mo4040Congrats...enjoy it as you have earned it. Having the same hours each work day makes a big difference.
For the last 13 of my current 32 yr career, I have worked what is referred to as the 'Rattler' schedule:
1st day 1600-0000
2nd day 1445-2245
3rd day 1200-2000
4th day 0600-1400 and then come back that same night and work from 2230 until 0630 the next morning.
The schedule gives you long weekends and the week goes by fast. On the flip side, it is a fairly brutal schedule for sleep and forget family/social time during the week.

Just curious why the owners think that’s a good idea. I remember years ago a buddy of mine did that for Beer company and the only way to get a locked schedule was to commit to nights.

hvyhawlerCongrats on the change. We work a 12 hour schedule, days and nights, 6:15 to 6:15, every other weekend off. 4 days, one off,3 nights, weekend off, 3 days, one off, 4 nights, 8 off. Wouldn't want to go back to a Mon-Fri 8hr shift with weekends off...

I'm single but I just missed a lot. Friends doing stuff during the week and I couldn't.
Going good so far and it took a few days to get on schedule but so far I'm enjoying it.

Rinehartjoatmonv, congrats on getting back to the "normal?" world...
Both my wife and I did rotating shifts for 5-6 years. My body did not like it. I was always tired and discovered I caught colds/flu much more often than living a normal work schedule.
I have a friend who worked at a hospital in Western NY for 16 years on night shift. I dunno how he did it. He finally got off in 2013.
Enjoy it, and all the best to you and family!

The 'company' is Uncle Sugar. Each shift has different dynamics, so, you work each one to maintain proficiency. There are facilities with different schedules, but, this is the most prevalent out there. At least the days off are locked-in. I also did a stretch with rotating days off. That schedule was wonky.

kramdenI worked 2nd for years and HATED it. Then changed jobs to one that I could start as early as I liked. I deliver snacks to C-stores and super markets. Eventually went the other way And started at 3-4 am everyday. LOVED it. No traffic on the roads, no customers in the stores etc. I was on commission not hourly so It cut my hours way down. Gave me most of the day to do whatever I wanted. Did that for over 30 years. What a change.

JR78Be careful, the sun is out during day shift. Everything else is the same. Stupidity and crime have no sense of time.
