there’s a special election coming up tomorrow in Maryland’s 7th Congressional District. Voters there will be deciding who will replace Elijah Cummings in the House. But they’re doing things quite a bit differently than usual this time around. To avoid exposing more people to the novel coronavirus at crowded polling places, Governor Larry Hogan ordered that the election be conducted using mail-in ballots.

Hundreds, if not thousands of people still hadn’t received their ballots by last Thursday and it takes, on average, five days for the ballots to reach their destination after they are dropped in the mail.

Voters were to receive ballots earlier this month for the state’s first-ever mail-in election. Republican Gov. Larry Hogan ordered the election held primarily by mail to protect voters and election officials during the coronavirus outbreak.

Not only was the state unable to get ballots to everyone who is registered to vote, at this point they don’t even know how many people were left out. Nor do they appear to have any way to generate a list to compare to the voter rolls and figure it out.

Just telling people to put on a mask and go vote in person isn’t going to be a viable solution either. Not only would it fly in the face of the reason they wanted to vote by mail in the first place, but there are only a handful of in-person polling places available. Many people that the newspaper contacted said they didn’t know where those polling places were located and they hadn’t received any notification of the location by mail. And assuming they do manage to find one, it will probably be far more crowded than the usual spots would have been.

In an effort to correct the situation in the final days before the election, the state began attempting to email pdf versions of the ballots to voters who complained about not receiving one. I say “attempted,” because at least some voters told the Baltimore Sun that the attachments failed to download and open properly. Others complained that they don’t own a printer so they would have to go out (violating the stay at home order) and find a friend or a local business (if any are open) where they could print them.

Sounds like Maryland is suppressing the vote of the elderly and poor. Heck, those people can't even afford an ID. And they expect them to have email, a computer and printer?

Just more vote fraud and keeping a lot of people from actually voting in order to rig the results.

Yep.
What many people don't realize is that the more variables you introduce into an election, the less transparent it is and the easier it is to introduce vote fraud.

I am firmly against mail-in voting, except for very limited exceptions (military stationed outside their homes of record). Ballots should be paper and marked by hand. (Electronic counting is acceptable, as long as the ballots are retained.) Voter photo ID required at the polls--notarizing (or military equivalent) for absentee ballots. Most places can provide transport to the polls for those unable to do so themselves.

If eligible voters don't have any ballots to fill out by election day, or if there are few or no polling places open, there should be no election. But that would make too much sense, I suppose. The asshole croaked last fall, so it's not as if there's any hurry that a couple of weeks wouldn't take care of.

Mail-in voting is fraud waiting to happen....big time.

Well, that's the thing. If a whole bunch of people didn't get ballots in time and those people might or might not vote for the Dem-approved candidates, then guess what? The election has already been rigged and voter fraud has already occurred.

Um, this was Elijah Cummings district. Here's tip for everyone, the Democrat is going to win.

With that said, this is going to provide a textbook case of why mail-in voting should not be allowed.

That pretty much describes everyone in the district.

We had some special vote where I live about putting speed bumps on our street. The county mailed out ballots to all the households in the affected area. But the ballot received was for the same street number but a different street. So I didn't open it. It took me about a week to get around to dropping it off at the proper address.

It was only later did I realize that it was a ballot for the speed bumps. The initiative failed which angered me because I really wanted the speed bumps installed.

Mail-in voting is a bad idea. Too many things to go wrong.

Does an ID ever get checked with voting by mail? I think you can register by mail (or thru a www site) with no ID check. Voting by mail seems to also eliminate the ID check.

Whaaat? That's how the Demokrats want it?

I wonder how many challenges are going to be filed..one hopes enough to have the ballots invalidated
