It is going in on the corner where Rudy’s has been for years. Rudy’s built a new building a few blocks away on the loop. Coopers is on the loop in the other direction towards the river. Barbeque row!

I don’t care for Rudy’s, or Coopers. Too hot! So I have high hopes for Blacks.

Years ago I worked less than a mile from the Rudy's on 290 in Houston. I ate there every now and then and thought it was fine but nothing special.

Best barbeque in Houston? Virgie's on North Gessner. Wonderful. Beats anything I've found in the Hill Country and I've hit them all. On Texas Monthly's list as well.

Do you mean Temperature hot or spicy hot ?

Rudy’s is ok - consistent journeyman level BBQ but nothing special.

I like Coopers in New Braunfels, in fact I much prefer it to the other Ccopers locations in Llano and Junction.

Of the big three in Lockhart, I like both Blacks and Smittys over Kreutz. Smittys has better brisket but I think Blacks is better overall.

A little history: The current Smittys location is the original Kreutz Market location. Basically after a death in the family, the heirs got into a protracted battle over the business. The Smittys Folks got the location and the the current Kreutz folks got the name.

Honestly I prefer The Salt Lick in Dripping Springs, and Louie Mueller's BBQ in Taylor TX.

Tere is a BBQ place on 87 just outside Fredericksburg called cranky franks- I’ve never eaten there but I hear it’s good.

I went to Black’ last June as part of a BBQ road trip and was underwhelmed. Not bad, just not near the best. Being a Dallas guy, I was pleasantly surprised by Pecan Lodge. But Franklin’s was the best by a large margin.

The guys I was with do this road trip through different areas of Texas every year. Enough that I wonder how they are still upright. It was interesting that everything was compared against Franklin’s.

And why does some Tennesseean always have to jump in and ruin a BBQ discussion with talk of the swine?

Lol, no doubt you believe chili should have beans in it as well. You'd be wrong in both cases. Wink

When I lived in El Paso my first BBQ outing was a place run by a man from North Carolina. I thought I was going to eat some real BBQ. Turns out it was beef with dill pickles on it. You guys just don't know. If you want the real stuff you must come to West TN. Pork cooked slow on oak and hickory wood with red slaw. Nectar of the gods.

Spicy hot. For some reason, cooks around here think that unless it sets your mustache on fire or something, it’s not hot enough. That wasn’t the case in the classic barbeque joints of old. When Rudy’s labels their sauce “sissy sauce” and offers one even hotter, it shows what they think is important.

Now, every table of my youth had a bottle of pepper sauce and/or tabasco sauce to use at diner’s discretion, so I am familiar with the sentiment.

Thing’s seem to be out of hand, though.

I’ve not been to the Salt Lick in recent years, but when I was at UT 50 years ago, it was a favorite all you can eat destination, particularly after football games. We went out there a decade or so ago when my nephew was at UT and my kids, his cousins were here.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and be hungry waiting for this new Blacks to get open.

Blacks has finally opened in New Braunfels, at the old Rudy’s location, Loop 337 and Common. I thnk they opened about a week ago or so. My brother, a friend and I went there today to try it out.

The food is decent. We had moist brisket, sausage, beans and potato salad.

The operation is very similar in format to Rudy’s, stand in line, order a al carte, so much of this, so much of that, meat(s), sides, drinks, whatever you want, no menu items, 2 meat plate, etc.

I liked it better than Rudy’s as it is much less heavily seasoned hot. Rudy’s has “Sissy Sauce” which is quite hot and then another sauce that is really hot. The meats are hot, the beans are hot, etc. Black’s meats, beans and potato salad are much better, barely any heat. The flavors were attractive, but not up to the best, which around here was Krause’s mesquite smoked. It probably won’t drive the lines down at Franklins, or Salt Lick. The place was crowded today at lunch, nearly 20 minutes in line to order! Good thing Gennaro’s (Italian place next door) was closed!

Now it is Barbeque Row along Loop 337 with Rudy’s new location a couple of blocks away, the new Blacks in the old location, and Coopers a few blocks further down. Bill Miller has a restaurant by the I-35 frontage road, too.

Black’s has ribs, beef and pork, turkey, chicken, cole slaw, peach cobbler, pecan cobbler, banana pudding and ice cream, sodas, tea and beer, too.

We went to Black's in Lockhart on one of our 3-joints-in-1-day tours. Don't have my notes with me, but it was really good. If they are anything like the original it is well worth the stop!

Our normal order for the two of us to split was a sausage, 1# brisket and either a couple ribs or a little pulled pork. Unless, UNLESS!! it was somewhere with a killer Dino beef rib. OMG.

I miss TX. We were halfway through the top 50 joints in the state..... Frown

Our overall favs were Stanley's Famous in Tyler and Pecan Lodge in Dallas. With a very close 3rd for Muellers. Anytime we were within 50 miles we'd detour just to get a couple of the ribs...

JALLEN, not sure if you make it as far east as Brenham, but Truth Bbq is excellent as well, especially Saturdays when they do beef ribs.

This was the third time I have left the house this month. I haven’t been to Austin in about two years, and to San Antonio a few times, mostly to pick up/drop off someone at the airport.

I have been to Brenham a couple of times for the parade, playing in the Longhorn Alumni Band for free barbq and Blue Bell ice cream in the park!

Bill Miller’s like in San Antonio? They’re ok for a quick, working-man’s lunch, but completely outclassed by the general run of BBQ joints mentioned in this thread. I can’t believe they’re going head to head against them.

They aren’t, of course. I agree with your asessment. Just mentioned as in the area, a distant 4th.

Blacks is one of the better ones in Lockhart, but it is always tough to open a new joint that is as good as the original. It seems that once BBQ places try to expand, the satellites aren't as good.

I like Rudy's in Leon Springs, the original. The others are good, but not up to the original. I theorize that the institutional knowledge never leaves the original place. And, if there is a really good pitmaster, then no other person will ever measure up.

Yep. Rudy’s built a new building and moved a few blocks up the loop towards I-35. Blacks came in and took the old Rudy’s location.

My first impression is that it is a lot like Rudy’s offerings but not as hotly seasoned. I prefer that to Rudy’s.

I don't know about my favorite in all of Texas, but Roegels is very good. When he broke away from that Baker's franchise and went on his own, the food went up in quality. His brisket is very good. The pork and pork ribs are good, too, but brisket is my standard for judging a BBQ place.
