It took me a moment to figure out what looked off. If you look close the riflemen have their M-14’s on different shoulders. Blooper or something unique to the USMC???

Looking at multiple photos of USMC Color Guard, it appears they place the rifle on the shoulder away from the flags. So they would be on different shoulders.

It's protecting the flag, facing outwards

They are marching to a location in line and will be abreast of each other at the halt. Then as BB61 stated the riflemen will be outboard to protect the colors.
