Fugly 25" tall bronze sculpture I won on eBay. Bronze of this size might go for a couple of hundred to several hundred and I got it for a song from a church ministries thrift store in the Palm Beach Florida area. Should be here next Wednesday. Anyway, it was listed as "Swan Birds Bronze Sculpture" but looks more like Egret to me. Might just be some stylized bird though. Dunno. I did a google image search and came up with nada, so it may be kinda unique or vintage. Google image search did suggest "Crane". Bird people?

I'm guessing a Great Blue Heron, but will defer to the real bird experts here. When a thing is funny, search it carefully for a hidden truth. - George Bernard Shaw

Thanks for the suggestion Jim !!! All suggestions appreciated. It may not even be representative of a North American bird for all I know.

I can't help you identify it exactly, but I've seen very similar ones that had the same base at an art gallery somewhere here in South Florida from a known artist and it's EXPENSIVE. It should be marked somewhere on the base as to who the artist is. This one is similar but not the same, however the base has a lot of resemblance. https://www.allsculptures.com/...e+Egret#.XowxBW5FxPY

My GF called a while back, all excited, describing this gigantic bird standing in her goldfish pond. I told her she might want to go out and count her goldfish. That didn't take very long... When a thing is funny, search it carefully for a hidden truth. - George Bernard Shaw

The seller was a church ministries thrift store. The item was likely a drop-off. Provenance unknown.

After about 40 minutes I found out that some of bird statues similar to those were made of bronze, many, many more were made out of spelter , brass coating and copper coating and a sealer on top to prevent tarnish . there are youtubes showing how to test the metals. www.artbronze.com may be able to help Safety, Situational Awareness and proficiency. I think they are most like herons. Probably not Audobon-accurate, but not bad. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

Interesting !!! ... found this, "To test for spelter, scratch the base of the piece. Bronze will appear as bright yellow while spelter will show a silvery scratch."

I thought it looks like an Egret, which is really just a type of Heron I've read, but may have to defer to google image search and Mars_Attacks and just call it a Crane. Since bendable mentioned "spelter", I won't be shocked to find if it's made of that ... and perhaps from China even. The church ministries thrift store wouldn't have known the difference. Won't know until I get it though, but don't think this particular one has been widely mass produced. Can't find another image of it. If it is spelter, at least I don't have much in it. If it is indeed bronze, I got a great bargain. "Cranes, or herons as they are also referred to as, play an important role in Chinese mythology. In Chinese culture, the crane is venerated as the prince of all feathered creatures and thus has a legendary status. Embodying longevity and peace, it is the second most favored bird symbol after the phoenix. Throughout the imperial times, crane motifs were used on the robes of civil officials to depict their ranks. Because of its ability to fly high and over long distances, its wings were used as an amulet for protection against exhaustion." I had NO idea about spelter. Thanks bendable !!!

They are either cranes or pterodactyls. _____________________________ "The problems we face today exist because the people who work for a living are outnumbered by those who vote for a living." Herons are a sort of egret. I don't think they are cranes. They don't look like sandhill cranes, which are the common ones around here. They don't look like whooping cranes either. Both cranes are heavier in the body, and neither has a crest. But again, these aren't the most accurate of statues. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.
