For those who keep an AR or similar in an SUV, how are you storing it to ensure security and readiness? I live in a small city - not at all a high crime area- but still a small city. So I'd want to be sure that the rifle can't be stolen when I'm not in the car. There is no trunk, so how do you all keep the rifle out of site and difficult to steal?

Right now I don't keep one in the vehicle, for that reason no good place to conceal. In the market for a Kel-Tec Sub2000, S it's 9mm and takes Glock mags and both fold up for storage, allow optics or hard sights. S&W makes their new Folding Carbine as well it's more expensive, folds better, heavier, but it takes only S&W mags. Not that it's the answer you wanted but that's my thought/direction as it would fit into the console or a small bag under a seat. If I did keep a full size AR the pickup has a panel that opens behind the back seats for access to jack parts for fixing flats, thing I'd maybe put it in there in a gun bag, slows access though. Buddy kept an AK pistol in a tennis racquet bag in his truck below the seat.

I dont keep a rifle in my Jeep on a daily basis. When I do, I have a cargo box that spans the width of the rear compartment. The angle of the seat from the box creates a space that a rifle fits into nicely. Out of sight and out of mind, so to speak. No quick access however. In a small backpack. Nothing more than that. I recently installed a Strike Industries short pistol buffer tube on my AR Pistol, so it fits in a small backpack nicely with six spare magazines. ~Alan Acta Non Verba NRA Life Member (Patron) God, Family, Guns, Country Men will fight and die to protect women... because women protect everything else. ~Andrew Klavan

Still finding my way |
I like this bag. Holds a 10.5" nicely and has enough pockets for a few mags and accessories. I have one of those big seat covers for the backseat that covers behind your legs all the way to the floor so that's a great spot since it's invisible from the outside but still can be grabbed quickly. Makes the passenger leg room a little tight but my dog never complains as he's the only one riding back there.

Not picking on you CSM, but this is my #1 frustration with my fellow gun owners. Vehicles will get broken into, all the time. Be it less or more likely depending on your location, but it will still happen a lot more than a home invasion or bodily assault. All you’ve done, when you leave a weapon in the car, is armed an asshole. It’s one of the primary sources of weapons for criminals, and an easy one to cut off. Arms should be on your person, or temporarily stowed if not possible, but never permanently located in a vehicle. /end of rant

Which SUV are we talking about here? There are vehicle specific (and some adaptable solutions that are more universal) secure storage options available, to include cargo area storage, under the rear seat and overhead options as well. Here's one source as an example --> https://pro-gard.com/product-c...o-storage-solutions/ There's NO reason you can't have a 'secured' firearm in your vehicle! There is truth in his words, cars are where they find guns, we had a crew run the neighborhood looking to break in cars parked outside. If it was unlocked they went in, only thing they could be looking for was electronics, purses , wallets or guns. They make safes for consoles that you can store a gun most I find are pistol safes only.

You're the only one the mentioned locating the Rifle 'permanently' in the vehicle. I don't believe that's what the OP is talking about here! ____________________________________________________________ If Some is Good, and More is Better.....then Too Much, is Just Enough !! A vintage Eagle Industries 16" AR case. It has four exterior pockets for 30 round magazines and the forward portion of the case has a large, zippered pouch on the exterior. Sorry, but there are times one must weigh risk against need. To say that one should never keep a firearm in a vehicle is shortsighted, to say the very least. Risk of theft can be gauged, and if a man is parking his vehicle in a populated area, people coming and going, and it's daylight, the risk of a car break-in is quite low. Leaving a firearm overnight in a vehicle, now that's a different story, but the idea that leaving a rifle in one's car, is always a bad idea, is simply not true. These days, the idea that when you leave your house, you are limited only to a concealable handgun, might leave you vulnerable when it counts.

People break into houses and steal guns. Better not keep any guns in my house either! Well shit.. can’t keep em in the car.. can’t keep em in the house.. I better just let the govt have them all for safe keeping. This is where my signature goes.

My question is though....where do you keep the case in your car and how do you secure it? I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I don't want to just leave a rifle case in the back where it is visible to all.
I do mean permanently more or less. I was inspired by Para's recent post about readiness where he suggests taking your rifle with you as much as possible. I don't want to carry a rifle to put in the car every time I go somewhere. I'm talking about having one stored in the car so that it is always there and with me whenever I am going somewhere. I was just wondering if people do that and if so, how they secure it.

Can you put a bag under the rear seat if there is room, or, in the back compartment and get the sliding cover if you don't have it from Jeep to conceal anything in the back. its why it's a good idea to have a folding brace so you can put it in a smaller bag.

Behind the seat of my truck. In the case of an SUV, you might consider hiding it in plain sight by placing the case on the floor and then putting one of those foldable reflective windshield blockers over it. Anyone looking in will think that's all it is- just a piece of padded Mylar. At times, I've done just that- wedging the case under the passenger seat, and the part of the case that sticks out gets covered by the blocker.

Have the versa mounted in the house. It works very well and allows a lot of finger prints to be stored. I have about 8 saved for my thumb at different angles to ensure it always reads no matter how I put my thumb on it. Been looking at the new rifle safe to mount on the back wall behind the seat of my pickup. It will require reinforcement on both sides to make it secure. If you're referring to the S&W "Response," Martin-who-works-with-me and I went to Florida Gun Exchange (FGE) in the Daytona area (Ormond? Holly Hill? they all blend together in one metroplex). We looked at, fondled, and compared, the S&W and the KelTec. The S&W Response does, in fact, come with a magwell adapter for Glock 19 (and of course 17) magazines. Also, if you use an optic type sight mounted on the top rail, the sight needs to be removed in order to fold the KelTec. The S&W folds to the side, so a sight mounted on the top rail does not need to be removed to fold the rifle. The stock on the S&W adjusts easily for LOP. I don't remember whether the KelTec does. After comparing them, Martin bought the S&W. FGE's price was $699 plus sales tax, no charge for the 4473 processing. I did not buy one, figuring that I would be able to test Martin's when we go to the range, and decide whether I like it, but it definitely looks like a contender. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

The question, the actual question, begs a follow-on question. Is your plan to fight from your vehicle, or to abandon the vehicle and seek cover and concealment on foot? If fighting from your vehicle, meaning physically at the vehicle, doors open, then seek the typical police mounting methods. If fleeing from the vehicle, but fighting from elsewhere, then the solution is a go bag. ------- Trying to simplify my life...

Para, I think we are saying the same thing. I’m speaking about those individuals who have a “truck gun” or firearm that is always kept in the vehicle. I’m 100% onboard with calculated risk, having a weapon onboard when you need it, taking it inside at night, whatever makes sense for your specific situation. If your vehicle is stored in a garage every day at home and at work, then maybe even permanent is fine. Most of us don’t have that, so we should ponder bringing weapons inside at night.
