Not me, but an acquaintance nicknamed "Buzz." Buzz is now a senior captain with one of the large airlines, but back in his Air Force days, he flew a Lear in what could be described as a VIP limo service. He tells the story of a flight he did with Chuck Yeager on board. He asked General Yeager if he would like the co-pilot seat; the invitation was accepted. His first flight in a Lear, General Yeager kept staring at the wings, and finally asked Buzz what those devices on the wings were. Buzz launched into an explanation of how airflow is controlled at high speeds, and General Yeager interrupted him, saying "I know quite a bit about high speed flight, Buzz." הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

Many moons ago back in the late 70's or early 80's I was hired by Genesis magazine for 2 days to photograph porn star Marilyn Chambers at the Electronics show in Chicago. The photographer I work for at the time would not touch the job because of the low pay and the fact it would hurt his reputation at the Ad Agency that was trying to connect Genesis magazine with a Chicago photographer. Of coarse, I jumped all over the chance. I immediately called my best friend who worked as a Carpenter to see if he would want to assist me, he also jumped on the chance. I was told that Marilyn would be accompanied with her manager, Chuck Treynor ( also managed Linda Lovelass, from Deep Throat fame) and a protegee. My friend and I thought OMG after the first day together we would invite Her and her protegee for drinks after we finished, and then the most unbelievable night of sex that night and the night after. The reality was that her agent had absolute control over her, her protege did not come. Her manager told me on the side that he constantly had to tell Marilyn that if it was not for him she would be giving BJ's at truck stops, she responded to him like she believed that and never did anything without asking him first. I never imagined that a Porn star would have such a huge following. We were mobbed by crowds for both days. Marilyn was very nice and easy to work with after she set me straight after the first picture. I took her picture with a guy and before I hit the camera trigger I said to her, Marilyn can you give me smile, she did but after the picture she came up to me and said," I have had my picture taken thousands of times, I know how to look, you don't have to tell me how to look in a photo". She was right about that. When we finished she took a Polaroid picture with me and my buddy and wrote a little on the picture about how nice it was to work with us. My Buddy still has his but my wife ( girl friend at the time) immediately upon seeing it sent mine to the garbage can. I always missed that picture. Me with my arms around Marilyn and a scrip that simply stated, Lon, Loved working with you. I could have gotten sooooooo much BS value from it for years.

Everybody has heard the story about the old guy in overalls with the beat up truck at a bank trying to cash a check. I had an experience with one of those types. While I was living in the west I managed a couple car dealerships parts departments. The gentleman I speak of here I met at the first dealership, he was a well known rancher in the county. At the second dealership, not so known. The county previously mentioned was pretty rural, total population was about 20k. Where the second dealership was, suburban south of Bernalillo where Albuquerque is at. Anyhow, service writer called me over to the service drive. There was this older gentleman (since passed) named Dean. Driving a year or two old Buick Electra. Dressed in a flannel shirt, bib overalls. Anyhow, he was leaving his car for the shop to work on it and asked if I could give him a ride to town, town being the next one south where I lived and where the now closed previous workplace was. I said “Sure, give me a few minutes and I’ll be ready to go”. I went to my office, grabbed some paperwork to do at home when my phone rang. It was Johnny the service writer. He said “you gonna give that stinky old man (both he and his clothing were clean) a ride? I tried to rent him a car but he’s probably got all his money tied up in that car.” I replied “Oh believe me, he can afford it if he wants it” Johnny said “What are you talking about?” I named his ranch but Johnny never heard of it. I then named a local bank and he said “Sure I’ve heard of it, he work there?” “Well Johnny, he kind of does, he’s on the board of directors. And every couple of years he would come into the dealership (previous) and buy new cars or trucks for various family members. So yeah, he could have rented a car or maybe just bought another one to get home with today if he wanted.” I never said anything to Dean about that conversation, in fact the one hour or so trip home on I-25 he was telling me stories of his ranching days which I throughly enjoyed. Sadly he passed a year or so later, today his ranch still exists under his name together with a B&B there ina restored adobe house. Just remembered a quick one here. Had a neighbor who from time to time would take his car to that dealership. He’d call me and ask for a ride to or from the dealership which I gladly agreed to. Loved his stories too, retired Sergeant with the NM State Police. I asked him why New Mexico didn’t adopt the Fox body Mustang Lake many other departments around the cpu try did. His reply was “Damn things started to lift the ass end off the highway at 140 up!” -------------------------------------—————— ————————--Ignorance is a powerful tool if applied at the right time, even, usually, surpassing knowledge(E.J.Potter, A.K.A. I love reading all the post above please keep it going. The closest as I can come to is swimming with Elly May Clampett ( Donna Douglas). She was my brother in laws cousin and I was friends with her other cousins and son. She was in town ( Pride, La) and we where at her house swimming. Then she comes out and asked if she could swim too (it was her house). Of course he had on a pink suit. She was always a pleasure to see and talk to. Use to run into her at Walmart. I was always a basketball player and loved the game. When Pete Maravich came to LSU the Maravich family moved in across the street from my cousin. They became good friends and I got to hang out with them. Pete was my idol back then and I enjoyed going to their home. My teammate aunt got us tickets to LSU to watch the games in the old cow barn. That was show time. I'm tall and skinny like Pete was and one time I was at my cousin's house and Mrs. Maravich was there. I had shorts on and she told me I had knees just like Pete. Man I was walking on air then LOL. Too bad I only had his knees. When I was a Firefighter I had a couple calls that stand out in my old head. One was we worked what seemed like hours to get a man our of a crashed vehicle. Cutting the car away from him hwhile he was screaming. The next morning I was at the station alone and a nurse walked in. She asked if this was the station that worked the crash last night. I told her yes and she said she was the ER nurse that worked on him. She wanted to come tell us we saved his life and to thank us. That was really nice of her to take time to do that. One that got me was a elderly lady that lived close to the station and was having some heart problems. I went on the call and did the best I could do to check her our and comfort her until the ambulance got there. She made it to the ER and came back and lived probably 5 more years. She would tell everyone that I saved her life and kept saying it until she passed away. I told her It wasn't me it just wasn't her time. But it was a nice feeling knowing it made her happy. I still think about her. I pray for our LEO's, FF and EMS their world is so much different now than in my day. _______________________________________________________ And no, junior not being able to hold still for 5 seconds is not a disability.

Not me but my wife. Before she retired from teaching for many years she would meet here sister in Austin, TX for girls state basketball state championships. She would get tickets the year before (which would give them seats close to the floor). Then Gov. George Bush would make it point every year to go and give the winning team their championship awards and visit with the team. The year he was running for president my wife and her sister were sitting with the speaker of the Texas houses wife. The speaker just happened to come with the governor and came up and was visiting with his wife and my wife. My wife casually asked him, "You think we might meet the governor?" He said, "Sure." "George, would you come up here, please. There are friends of my I would like you to meet." He came up and visited for a minutes. He asked my wife what she did and when she said he was a teacher, he said "You know I have a soft spot in in my heart for teachers....my wife is a teacher." _________ Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right. Still finding my way |
I was the front man for a cover band a long time ago. I sang and played guitar. One night we got to play a show at a big venue in Denver that had a huge turnout. Like a couple thousand people. I was nervous as hell since I've only played in front of bar crowds of at most 50-60 people. We played really good that night but the magic happened when we played the Metallica version of Whiskey in the Jar. The whole crowd was on their feet dancing and singing along. The energy I felt back and forth from them to the stage was like nothing I have ever experienced and have not since.

Way back when I was just out of high school, I was working in a full service gas station in So. Cal and a car pulled into the full service island. It was Billy Barty sitting on a phone book, gave him directions to the sports bar in Covina. He was super friendly.

Two quick ones that are funny because I was with my wife both times and she didn't realize who she was talking to until I told her afterwards. We had gone to Martha's Vineyard to visit my brother who lives there. My brother was friends with Ben Taylor (son of James Taylor and Carly Simon) so he took us into Midnight Farm Boutique which Carly owned. My wife was busy looking around for someone famous and after we left we had to tell her that Carly Simon was the woman who helped buy her stuff and checked her out at the register. She was so busy looking around she missed it. About 2014 we were in the Ft. Lauderdale BMW dealer waiting to pick our car up and were sitting in their small waiting room. In walks an older couple, the man had long , and a little wild looking white hair, and they were both dressed casually. They sat down across from us and we sat and talked for a good 15 minutes. During this time the wife went to get a cup of coffee and made a cup for my wife. After they left my wife said " They were nice". She felt like an idiot when I told her that was Bruce Dern and his wife Andrea Beckett. She then said I thought he looked familiar. Being a LEO in South Florida I have met numerous famous people including movie/TV stars and pro athletes. I learned that if you treat them normal most are pretty nice and genuine. I was once on a detail with Dan Quale though and he was an idiot. Went into a supermarket and grabbed peaches for a photo op. Guess he thought he was in Georgia, not Florida.
