Page late and a dollar short |
Have had a few over the years. First one was a ‘54 Chevy with an engine swap, 383 Chrysler and four speed trans. This was 1970. Several Pontiac’s, one GTO and a couple big cars, one a four speed and one an automatic, all centered around a 400 Ram Air III engine. And a couple Chevys, one a 77 El Camino, started life as a 305, within two years in 79 it was 350’ed, dual exhaust with headers and B&M shift kit. Then my daily driver was a 78 Caprice that saw duty as a detective’s car, traded in at the car dealership I worked at. That got a fresh 350 with similar mods as the El Camino less the headers, that was my hundred miles a day commuter car for a number of years. Now another lowly Pontiac in the garage, 67 2+2 428 cid four speed and an unfinished 455 swap in a 55 Buick. -------------------------------------—————— ————————--Ignorance is a powerful tool if applied at the right time, even, usually, surpassing knowledge(E.J.Potter, A.K.A. I've only had a couple of performance cars over the years. My very first car was a 1970 Mustang that I spent every dime I had to make it go faster, lol. It had a 351W, an auto tranny and a 9-inch rear. It was a stock 2-barrel, but I swapped an aluminum dual-plane intake and a 600 holley, headers and a Competition Cams dual-pattern cam. Met my ex-wife to be and sold the Mustang for an Audi 5000 Turbo since she lived about 50 miles away and the Mustang was getting about 12 MPG. The Audi was one of the "unintended acceleration" cars and it happened to my Mom; launched itself in reverse down the driveway and into our neighbor's house. Anyway, I loved that car, it was a real sleeper, and with Quattro AWD it was as fast in the snow as it was on the dry roads. Owned a 944 that I had to sell to pay the lawyer for the Divorce and that was about the end of my performance car habit. I did build a 1956 F100 pickup as a street rod/cruiser but had to sell it. Those cars were all fun, but the fastest thing I have ever driven, well, street legal was a Ferrari 488 in Vegas. That dual-turbo small v8 combo ran all day at 130mph with the AC on.

My first new car was a 1970 BMW 2002; it felt pretty fast to me-- 110 hp; 0-60 in about 12 seconds. My next sporty car was a 1986 Acura Integra LS; lots of fun--but not very fast. Then I had two Honda S2000's. The first was a lease, a 2001. Second a 2005 so with the AP2 engine. Redline only 8000 rather than 9000, but much more comfortable. I still have that one, but haven't driven it in over 6 months. _________________________ “Remember, remember the fifth of November!"

Understand the thrill of Big Motor power....while I never could afford operating one myself, lotsa buddies were more than happy to show me what their new muscle would do. I just always had more use for Jeeps, pickups or 2 seated sports cars that handled & rode well. My last couple motorcycles had more horsepower than most of my cars.

Told cops where to go for over 29 years… |
I’ve never been afraid of speed, LOTS of triple digit miles burned up in cars and on sport bikes over the years. My stock 2017 Mustang GT (435 hp) was the only vehicle that was actually scary powerful to me. Was fun to drive, but just didn’t feel confident/safe with the power it had. Couple that with me not driving it as much as a car like that should be and it just didn’t make sense to keep it as a third vehicle. I enjoyed the 5 years we had together, but after just 5 months with my Bronco I already have more great experiences than I can recall with the Mustang. What part of "...Shall not be infringed" don't you understand???

My only "fast" car ever has been a 2008 BMW Z4M Roadster. 330hp, 6MT, 3200#. I love that car, and have had it since 2008 with 8000 on the odometer. It's light, fast, and cuts corners like a surgeon's scalpel. I've seen an honest 145mph in it with the engine still pulling for more. I honestly believe it is the penultimate BMW straight six sports car. Yes, the next gen M4/3 V8 has more power and is still naturally aspirated. (and I have superficially explored putting one of those high-revving V8s into my beauty - electronics make that a majorly difficult and expensive and kludgy position) I don't think I could handle a real major increase in go juice in this car, and I'm just happy every time I drive it that I can't see risking that for more retrograde g-forces. Fast on a track is amazing, fast (and fun) able to be used in real life is completely different. My Z4, old and "slow" as it is, is more powerful and fast than I can use on most roads. A Miata can drive at 8-9/10ths everywhere and put a huge smile on your face. A Corvette will have to be driven like a granny for virtually 99.9% of its life, despite amazing capabilities. While I have vision's of a C9 Z06 with a fabled flat plane crank, making 800+ HP and beautiful music, I would only ever hear that in 1st gear, and never properly exercise such a beast. I'll be content with the beast I can barely exercise and contain with it's 330 meager HP, light weight, and unbelievably stable chassis that I have never been able to shake.

My post midlife crisis is a 2017 c7 Corvette Grand Sport heritage #111. Quicker than my 92 Non stock Mustang 5.0LX and a 93 BMW 325is with a Dinan chip, intake and exhaust mods. All fun in their own way

Over the years I have been fortunate enough to own quite a few hot cars but my favorites have been my Corvettes. My first was a new 69 427 tripower coupe with side pipes. 435 HP made the rear tires disappear at alarming rates but I was 20 so that explains a lot. Had to sell it because insurance got more expensive than the payments in the early seventies. Went quite a few years with more mundane but still interesting cars. My next Vette was a 96 Grand sport convertible. Very sharp car and it ran well with the LT4. It went away due to divorce. Next was a 2017 Grand Sport coupe with the Z07 suspension, quick through corners but rode like a big truck. My current is a 2019 Z06 convertible. It is as much fun to drive as the 69 was. Tons of torque. I have no intentions of getting a C8 as I am an old school front engine, long hood, short deck kind of guy. If the facts don't fit the theory, change the facts |
The first new really fast car I purchased was a 1967 Sunbeam Tiger Mark II with the Ford 289 V-8 at a price of approximately $4,280 out the door. This thing would scare you and had a tendency to gain speed on you if you didn't watch the clock. Stupid move on my part when I sold it to buy a 1970 Hemi-cuda; the young do stupid things

Awaits his CUT of choice |
I had a couple of v6s at first. Chevy Berretta and Mitsu 3000GT. Kinda fast in the 200+ HP range. My first truly fast car was a Jaguar XF Supercharged. 425HP of supercharged joy and luxurious to boot. My current fast car is a 2012 BWM 550Xi. 400HP. I prefer the supercharged band of the Jaguar to the Turbo band of the BMW but both are/were great cars.

I've only had one "fast" car, a 2016 Challenger 5.7L. Not a Hellcat, but still. I've always been pretty much a truck guy, but I had been driving my `97 F250 for 20 years and felt like I needed a change. I was also nearing 60 years of age. The Challenger had been the dealer's demonstrator, and it was loaded. I called it my midlife-crisis car. I found a little used back road and had it up to 100MPH a few times. One time I hit 115, but I only did that once as it started to scare me a little. I wound up selling the car about 18 months ago as I was getting ready to retire and had better things to do with the money that I was spending on payments and insurance. I got it out of my system though, and now I'm back to driving a half-ton pickup where I belong, and happy.

I have also been fortunate to own several late model Corvettes. 2001 Z06,2003 Z06,2009 Z06,2012 Callaway SC606, and current one 2007 Z06. All scary fast. JEREMIAH 33:3

Early 70s low mileage Dodge Charger. Easily over 100 mph with little effort. Scary light in the rear end though. Would love to have it back in the same condition as when I stupidly let it go. One of the multiple poor decisions that I made in my youthful days. Also, a low mileage Daytona 500 pace car edition Trans Am (1983 I believe). 1 of only 2,500 made. Loved that car also. However, not a good vehicle for parenthood. Infant son absolutely hated being in it. Cried to the heavens. Last car of any speed in my life of adventure but very detuned power. Ditto on having it back in the same condition. Currently in lifted Jeep Wrangler mode. Would consider a current body style Dodge Challenger, 2003-2004 Mustang Mach 1, Bullet Mustang of that model range or the Bullet Mustang of 2008. Speed not relevant for those choices. Just really like the looks of those particular models listed above. Hoping that I did not drift the thread off track. Obviously not prejudiced on manufacturers brand name. YMMV.

Staring back from the abyss |
My brother had a 67 Mustang with a 3-speed and a 390. I got that thing to lay rubber in 3rd one day. Scary power in a fairly light car. My own first fast car was a 70 Cutlass with a 350. Doesn't sound like much, but it had some serious get up and go. Won a few drag races out on Airport Rd with it. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Doug Patton.
