For the online version, as I posted previously, I am being charged $40 for the "upgrade" to deluxe and I am also being charged a additional $40 for state. It doesn't say specifically what the charge for state is actually for.
According to everything I have been able to find on the $40 download version, the download for state is free but you will still be charged more to file state. How much exactly, I have no clue, but I am guessing a additional $40

I think you are over thinking it.

If your taxes are simple, then it's free to both prepare and file your federal and state returns.

If you need the deluxe version, then it's $40 to prepare and file your federal return. Then another $40 to prepare and file your state return for one state.

You can't find out how much it costs, because it's included.

If you've paid for the 2020 TurboTax Deluxe, the $40 you've paid includes electronic filing. You will then have to pay another $40 to prepare your state return, and that also includes electronic filing.

I have no idea how the online version of TurboTax works but the above is not correct for the download version.

Depending on the version of the download software you purchase, you get free copy of the software for one state. TTax graciously charge you an additional fee if you want to efile the state (it use to be 29.95). You can print the state return and paper file (at no cost). I assume this will be the same for 2020 returns.

I use the download version because I've been able to e-file up to 5 federal returns at no add'l charge. I prepare my returns, my kids returns, and my mother-in-law. (As I said in a prior post - don't know if TTax is the best software other but I know the interface and it picks up all the info from the prior year.)

I'm literally looking at the pricing sheet.

Update on my end of things...

Taxes done and sent and FREE Big Grin

Ended up going with TaxAct. I have used them several years back as well and had no issues so gave them another try. They "recommended" upgrading once throughout the whole thing but I declined and it never came up again.

Maybe that's new for this year. Also, hard for me to tell from that page if this is referencing the online or download version. Filing has always been included in the online version of the form. At least through last year, with the download version, you had to pay for the software and pay an add'l amount to efile.

I've used TurboTax online through my bank for many years. I file simple, and haven't had to pay for anything for years.
