Governor Kathy Hochul has banned pet stores. But puppy mills are exempt. No more puppies or kittens This message has been edited. Thank you Very little |
Looks like stores are no longer legal but you can buy from a home based breeder.

Just to point out the facts, this law was voted on by members of the New York State Legislature, who are representatives of the state's people. So, the people of New York requested this. Hochul signed the law in Dec. 2022. The bill easily passed in the Assembly and the Senate in 2021 or 2022. (57 to 5 in the Assembly.) I think it's important to note that statements like "Hochul has banned pet stores" are not even close to being factually correct. Maybe it's just me, but I care about the facts. She did not "ban" pets from being sold through pet stores; the people requested it through their state legislature and the law passed. You can purchase dogs from breeders in-state or out-of-state or adopt one from the pound. ^^ Oh yes, and the 'people' of New York requested the SAFE act too... Pure New Yorkistan...Excelsior! By that logic, I guess the 'people' of 'Constitution State' requested their Assault Weapons Ban(s) as well, no? ____________________________________________________________ If Some is Good, and More is Better.....then Too Much, is Just Enough !! Bullshit. In Minnesota, the Democrats had both houses and Governor for the past two years. They controlled the Senate by one seat and the house by a handful. That tells you that approximately half of the people never voted for them in the first place. Beyond that, they acted on behalf of hard core activists on issues that were never even campaign issues. Trans sanctuary, free medical care for illegals, etc. Don't tell me that "the people of NY" requested it.

Okay, never mind. Fuck a bunch of pet shop owners, puppy mills are much better. If you're goin' through hell, keep on going. Don't slow down. If you're scared don't show it. You might get out before the devil even knows you're there. NRA ENDOWMENT LIFE MEMBER

I respect Steve a lot from our past dealings and interactions, and while on the surface what he is saying is correct I tend to disagree when it comes to the state of New York. There, while a majority may be for one idea, that means one city wants something, the vast majority of the state does not. Honestly it needs to be its own territory so we can let it kill itself. It’s like the country as a whole but more exaggerated. 10 years to retirement! Just waiting!

did the founders imagine that, in such a vast country with much of it still unexplored at the time, population density in cities would reach 1000 per sq whatever vs the whatever it was at the time. The density of population in cities couldn't have been much higher than rural areas. Whereas now, cities with high density can out vote rural areas leading to disproportionate representation. Seems like there needs to be an amendment to better accommodate the rural areas of a state to be more equal in strength with the dumb city folk. I think we’re agreeing but I will add, I think it’s accurately catching the majority of the people as intended. It’s just that the people in those populated areas are often eating out of the governments hand or not even actual citizens. So while the system works on paper, it’s not working in practice. 10 years to retirement! Just waiting!

I don’t get downtownv’s image of Hochul. I think her behaviors are more like Cruella DeVille. You’re a lying dog-faced pony soldier

I respect 'steve495' as well, though I have had no direct dealings with him, so that respect is based entirely on his reputation here. That said, perhaps this was just an occurrence where inartful language was used to communicate something along the lines of 'You get the gov't you vote for and therefore the gov't you deserve', but like several have indicated, many take issue with the statement that 'the people requested' anything of the sort. Cities and their numbers wouldn’t be an issue if they weren’t such magnets for liberal insanity. It would be kind of nice if state Senates were apportioned by county and some sort of electoral college were used for governors. Of course, the city dwellers will never agree.

Hey, all I was pointing out was that the governor did not wake up yesterday and write an executive order to "ban pet stores" from selling pets. That is what was stated in the OP. Today, I happen to be a stickler for details for some reason. I agree that my "the people requested" comment was unclear. I intended to equate the legislature to "the people," as that is who they should be represent. Sorry about that. We're all adults here who are probably more politically savvy than most of the population, and many of us have been around the sun quite a few times. I'd say everyone here knew what was meant by the OP's title. And frankly, it's accurate. She signed the damn law. I can't imagine anyone here thought different. Since I love dogs... Frankly preventing pet stores from selling pups and kittens isn't a bad thing. Too many of these businesses look at dogs, cats, goldfish and snakes in the same light as bags of Purina Dog Chow, leashes, squeeze toys or pallets of Tidy Cat. They're just merchandise--albeit living and breathing--to make money off of. The business model of pet shops fosters the existence of the puppy and kitten mill business. If a breed sells great and makes a shop a lot of $$$ and now said shop wants more? Of course they go back to the source that they got the first batch from. How does that source meet that demand? Why "Crank 'em out, you little bitches"!, of course. Quintessential puppy mill fodder. Conscientious and ethical breeders of dogs and cats rarely if ever sell their 'babies' to shops. I know several breeders and some of the horrors that they tell about even mom and pop shops are cringe-worthy and downright vile. The old nationwide pet shops who sold bred animals were far worse. New York State isn't the first to ban such sales, and as far as I'm concerned hopefully it won't be the last. -MG
