I have abused my wallet for far too long.
I’m looking to get a quality US made wallet in either goat skin or bison leather. Does anyone have an opinion as to which would be better? Longevity would be my main concern.

Bison leather is very tough.

While this chart was for gloves, I think you'll find the comparison useful. Smile

My vote is for buffalo (bison) versus goat Big Grin

Have you considered alligator? Mine is a decade old and looks almost new as it wears like iron.

They stopped making elf skin wallets in the 1820's when they were hunted to the point of extinction. The elf's that we're left we're relacted north of the Arctic circle. I thought that was common knowledge.

They do make faux elf skin, but it does not hold up as well.

They are not always available (real alligator, not some cowhide print). I'd suggest emailing them with a copy of the image(s) I posted to inquire about availability. They have had a variety of colors besides the cognac I favor. Smile

If memory serves it ran around $30 in 2008. Also bought an ostrich cognac one in 2014 as a gift.

Addendum: just did a search on ebay and found some other sellers but must admit the prices are "up there."

It’s not so much the leather although it certainly can be. But it is as much or more about the grain (full vs split, etc) and the stitching (nylon vs cotton, etc).

That’s where the differences lie. My wallets never wear out from holes. The stitching comes loose and so forth.

Me. I recommend Bosca.

I’ve had some pieces for over 30 years.

Given the performance I've had in various leather gloves over the decades, I'd have to quibble with the above performance chart. Favorites for 'best performance' depending on primary task have emerged. And for some specific chore, non-leather versions have also demonstrated advantages.

Re: gator. My gator hide boots remain looking new after 20+ years. The first 10 was nearly daily wear.

re: goat skin: my set of Langlitz motorcycle leathers from the early 80s are goat skin. Granted they've been largely unused the past 20 years, they still look new. They wore like a second skin on numerous road trips thru the Outback Wastelands. Goat skin make fine wear in some glove applications.

Agree 'thin' for wallet is important quality.

If I have to give up thick rubber bands (worked for last 50 years), I’d vote alligator for durability, or deerskin for comfort.

About the only way I can still embarrass my wife is to pull out my “wallet” in public

Kangaroo leather is very dense and abrasion resistant. Used in critical contact points in motorcycle racing leathers.

I have a bison wallet from Duluth Trading that is attractive and seems bullet-proof.
