Suggestions for, and questions about, a new mattress PURCHASE MADE
My old innerspring type one has given up the ghost, having a large hollow (collapsed) spot where my hip normally goes. Today I felt a sharp point sticking up, so there is a little bit of urgency. I'm not looking to spend a grand or more, but neither will I get it from Freddy's Five-Finger Discount that fell off the back of the truck. Something in between. The size is twin.

My questions are about memory foam, gel (?) and hybrid (??) Other than rolling up into a package that will easily fit in my car trunk and greatly simplify getting it home, what, if anything, do those do that conventional ones won't? I have some memory foam insole sneakers that are quite comfortable.

I love my memory foam mattress and will never go back to a traditional one. They are nice and firm and just seem to support and mold to my body much better than a regular mattress. I hate having to travel or go on vacation now and sleep on a crappy traditional mattress that is ALWAYS too soft and I end up with a hurting back.

Just an FYI that a NIB memory foam mattress comes rolled up super tight in a big roll that is vacuum sealed and you open it up and give it 24-48 hours to fully uncompress.

For traditional type mattress, I highly recommend "The Original Mattress Factory."

You go to the showroom, pick the options you want, and they build the mattress to your specifications. Sales people are salaried, not on commission, so they have no incentive to upsell.

Cost is significantly lower than national brand names at typical mattress stores and quality is outstanding.

My wife and I have been using these mattresses for twenty years or more and they are great.

The closet locations to OP look like Hickory and Mooresville.

Plenty of memory foam options, we have one from Costco that's very comfortable, when we replace it will probably go the same route.

From the lack of mention, I take it the MF ones don't retain and amplify body heat and are not hot in the summer? My shoes with it don't get hot.

I take it it wouldn't be usable in the meantime. That means 1-2 more nights on the reclining loveseat. OK for taking a siesta, not so much for all night. I'll live.

That's interesting Smile, but not happening. In a half-mile stretch of the main business street there are probably a half-dozen sleep shops. Or Walmart, for that matter.

I used to be able to sleep on almost anything, anywhere, but not now.

I went a different route. I have a traditional mattress and then got a memory foam mattress topper for it. The topper has to be re-aligned every so often but other than that it's been great.

If there were not a collapsed spot with a sharp point, I'd have considered that. I think it's too late now.

Not cheap, but I'm very happy with Simmons Beautyrest mattresses. I doubt I'll ever buy anything different.

If your mattress need is immediate, a box mattress is likely the best bet. But, the mattress stealerships around town will deliver in a day or so.

The original mattress company has independent stores.

^^^ I have two, both standard versions, both firm, but one with a pillow top. The non pillow top is 8 years old and feels new. The pillow top version is 5 years old and also feels new.

Switched to a Purple mattress. Cool sleeping and comfortable. No more back aches or hip pain.

Just bought a new mattress two weeks ago, my old one felt just as the OP described, local mattress store had a Simmons Hybrid, $1100 on sale for $800. It does not come compressed in a box. The neat thing is I also purchased the adjustable base, it was on sale for $1200. Fantastic to be able to raise the head to watch tv, has other features like massage, lights, sleep sounds and zero gravity.
$2225 out the door, donated my old mattress and some extra sheets to the local men's recovery center. They were happy to have it.

We got our daughter a twin 'in a box' from Costco last year.
IT's surprisingly comfortable. To the point we've thought about getting their King to replace our aging TempurPedic.

IIRC: The twin was only like $300

My wife and I have bought a brand known as "Nap Queen", which can be gotten from Walmart and Home Depot. Not super expensive. It is a hybrid mattress, We bought a King, a Full, and a Single when we moved into our current house about 2-1/2 years ago, and they still feel great.

Good luck.

I went with tulalay latex. It's cooler than memory foam.

The nice thing about it is they can have a different firmness for his side and her side.

Purchased a Serta memory foam in "medium" firmness, $268 at Walmart. Upon unboxing, unfurling the two-square-blocks of plastic and paper wrapping and letting it poof out for a day, it feels quite a bit softer than the old one. (Keep in mind that the old one was worn out and probably should have been put out to pasture a long time ago, well before I found the hollow/pokey thing spot.)

If you have a box spring bed, you can put it on that or you can do what we did and buy a memory foam mattress platform which is just a big metal frame/bed thing that the memory foam sits on. They do not require a box spring like traditional beds.

Ours looks like this. I bolted our headboard right to the wall like hotels do and butted the frame up to it:

That's what I did. At least for now. The box spring has a tear in the fabric.
