Congratulations but I'm confused. At 160 lbs and 5' 10", you're not obese. What gives or what was driving your diabetes?

Good to know flashguy, Ill mention it at my next visit. Any kidney symptoms indicating a problem, if you remember?
No, no symptoms. It was noticed in my blood work soon enough to prevent serious damage. I now have a Nephrologist in addition to my Primary Doctor, and my kidneys are being well monitored. (Last visit last week showed some improvement, even.)

Haven’t any idea, I just know that last August I had what was described to me by a doctor as a “High glucose induced seizure “. I remember at the time the EMT saying my blood glucose was 473. The weight loss has occurred since this all started, at one point I was up to 205.

Okay, that makes sense. You lost weight because of the diabetes because your body was burning your body fat and muscles. I know lack of insulin keeps the body cells from absorbing the glucose in your blood system.

I'm sure you'll conquer it.

Just for some clarification, metformin doesn’t cause kidney issues but continuing it in the setting of kidney issues can cause “lactic acidosis” of which the mechanism is unclear. People should have regular lab work to monitor kidney issues so that their doctor can take them off of metformin if need be. The way that chronically high blood sugars cause heart disease is similar to the mechanism that can cause kidney disease.

Some people don’t feel symptoms as in flashguy’s case, but if symptoms were to be present they can include new insomnia or a metallic taste in your mouth. Fatigue and confusion can also set in.

For those diabetics worried about renal (kidney) function look at an ACE inhibitor. Yes they have side effects, but kidney impairment is a pretty bad side effect of the disease. Also if you can afford them a SGLT2 inhibitor have shown not only renal protective effects but also cardiac benefits.

Glad to hear your A1c is below 6. I am back below 7. Hopefully I can get below 6 in the next year, but I seem to bounce +/- .2 around 7.0. Currently on Metformin, a SGLT2 inhibitor (Jariance), and a DPP4 inhibitor. Have used insulin, Avandia, and glipizides in the past.

FWIW, I take Lantus (slow release insulin) each night and a Tradjenta (linagliptin) tablet daily. In the past I have used Metformin, Avandia, Avandamet, and Januvia. All those have been superseded by my current meds. I also take a capsule daily that has both cinnamon and chromium picolinate, and it does seem to have a beneficial effect.
