Ok, that is a dream of mine to be able to do that, I admit it. That was very satisfying to see.

Zipper merge…oh yeah!
That’s the thing that moves traffic faster than everybody piling up in one lane.

Two dumbasses. You damaged his car, but yours is also damaged. Roll Eyes Worse, it just takes a raging lunatic with a gun, and someone could pay a heavy price.

I'm all for safe merging, but what is the problem people have with others using the full length of the merge lane to do so? Why not use all the road?

In this specific instance, the merger was overly aggressive and should have backed off, but...

Karma works both ways. Maybe no one was letting him merge. I would have been the better driver and let him in. Of course there wouldn't have been a click bait video then. Roll Eyes

The problem is the butt hurt. Self-righteous assholes merge too early and get butt hurt when other people merge further up the empty lane.

This doesn’t happen with the zipper merge because nobody gets to pick some random merge point and get passed in the empty lane by someone else picking some other random merge point. With the zipper merge, one point is the merge point, both lanes are filled until that point, nobody gets to “zip up front”, and everybody gets a turn. It’s fantastic as both lanes move the same speed and everybody gets through at the same speed.

People are often adamant about being wrong on the zipper merge. There should ba a single merge point not 50 of them starting 300 yards before the merge. We were able to get in lines and take turns as children, how did we lose that capability as adults?

There was plenty of time and room to let that guy merge. I don't know what the context before was, but based solely on what's visible in the video, the car with the camera is the asshole.

Agreed.

The guy must have thought it was something to be proud of, though, since he posted that instead of immediately wiping the dashcam. Doesn't look to have occurred in a country replete with personal-injury attorneys though, so maybe that's not as big of a risk there.

I guess to be fair, I'd qualify the above as 'dashcam-car-driver was the biggest of the two assholes'. A smarter merging-car-driver would have given up at the first nudge.

I have long wanted to have pneumatic bumpers (metal) that raise up from under the truck on all 4 sides due to this shit behavior. Locally people will wait until the last possible moment imaginable and try to merge in. They are too good to wait like everyone else. Flip the switch, have metal bars extend out from under the truck to prevent any body damage, and bam! Play bumper cars mother fuckers! A dream, and only a pipe dream. I get the OP. I would never do it, but I get it.

Zipper merge is correct. It was the only good thing about Miami traffic - for some reason, they knew how to properly merge.

Nothing else, but they did do that.

Unless on an empty road, etc, anything else is illogical, and inefficient, and causes traffic issues.

It appears we have some last minute mergers here. Maybe where you live this is not a problem, but in heavy traffic areas I regularly see people who wait until the last minute to merge and then end up slowing traffic down. If they would do it when there are openings it would speed things up. But many think they should be able to speed around everyone to get to the front of the line. I’ve seen people speed down the turn lane and the shoulder to get to the front.

Yes, it would mess up both vehicles, cause a major insurance claim and possibly end up with a traffic fine.

Yes, zipper merge for the win. If everyone thought about how do we make the system work better for everyone, rather than “Screw everyone else, me, Me, ME!” zipper merge would be all we ever saw.

Another twist I’ve seen on this is when someone in the left lane (semi trucks 1/4 to 1/2 the time) gets tired of folks zipping by on the right and just straddles the lane. “Merge anywhere you want, behind me.” Razz

Yep, if the clip is real (not AI), the camera driver is the selfish asshole. The other car tried to merge long before the orange cones shrinking the right lane to the left. Pushing the little car towards the motorcyclists was an accident waiting to happen. And yes, zipper merging is the most logical, efficient method.
