Thoughts? Model recommendations?

Look into the NEATO Botvac. We have two, they are great.

Watch it if you have a dog, there was a funny video of a guy on you tube who's dog took a dump in the house, and the Roomba tracked it all over the house while he was at work.

We do have a dog, but it's been years since he's had an accident in the house.

My mom's German Shepard broke her Roomba into about 50 pieces strewn from one end of the living room to the other.....she was not pleased.

My daughter was given one. As it started, her corgi did a polar bear pounce and that was the end of it.

Had one a couple years ago. At first it was fun to watch, plus there was the obvious cool factor.

However it had idiosyncrasies. Crazier than my ex and that's saying a lot, eventually it threw itself down the stairs in a robotic suicide. Feeling relief more than anything else, I threw it out rather than use the warranty and put up with it any longer.

I like to think I contributed toward development of what will one day be a fairly useful product but I'm not convinced that day is here just yet.

100% absolutely could not live without my roomba. I have a dog that sheds a bit and it's great at getting the dog hair off the hardwood and tile floor, and pretty damn good at getting it off the carpet.

Last month I got a new puppy and the dreaded roomba+poo deal happened. Luckily it was on the hardwood and easy to clean... the floor at least. Took me ~3 hours to clean the roomba itself.

Needless to say, the puppy goes away now when I run it.

I don't even own a stand-up vacuum.

I have the 630 model, pretty much the most basic, bare-bones model you can get now. If mine broke for whatever reason, I'd buy a new one in a heartbeat. I had to replace the battery a couple of months ago, but I think it was close to 3 years of ownership and constant usage before replacement.

That said, I'm not beholden to the roomba brand name, I've looked at some reviews and there are some better options out there(but I don't remember which brand/models off the top of my head).

Be prepared, they're not cheap. The most basic model is going to be $300+, and they can get up to a grand for a fancier/more powerful model.

I took a big chance and got my wife the 860 for Christmas. She was thrilled. We have not had our Dyson out since. They are really nice and do a very good job on hardwood and carpet. It occasionally can't find its way back to its home charger.

We've had one for about 2 years. When it dies we will have another one that same day. We run it at 3 am and the dogs are put up so no dramatic poop incidents.

I read a story of a mother awakened by her crying toddler at the edge of her bed. She touches her toddler and the toddler is covered in a slippery, stinky substance. Turns out the dog had diarrhea, and the Roomba spread the diarrhea all over the house. The toddler got out of bed, and got into the smeared poo. Now, it's the middle of the night and the smeared poo is everywhere so she is up cleaning it before it dries out.

Cleans well but small canister capacity.
Does seem to get to everyplace eventually, despite seemingly random paths.

Make certain all cords are off the floor.
Ours has either gotten trapped or pulled stuff off of shelves.

Bought one on Woot, refurb, works great, fires itself up once a day and scurries around the house, it doesn't get caught on the several Persian rug ends like the original version, and the only issues have been it trying to get out the triple slider doors to the pool, fixed that by closing the doors, and once it went into our shower and scrubbed those floors, it's about an inch drop so it couldn't get out, fixed that with putting the bath rug rolled up in front of the entrance.

Other than that ours picks up a ton of dog hair from our Basset enough to fill the roombas basket daily. Initially the hound didn't like it, ran, then barked at it running around the house, now she just moves to another room when it comes in the room shes in...

All we need is a cat to ride around on it

I know 3 different dog owners who have had that exact same experience with their Roombas. The dog inevitably gets sick or has an accident in the house, and the Roomba comes along and efficiently smears the vomit/diarrhea all over the house.

My wife got a roomba, she likes it. It does work very well. I put googly eyes on it.
