I'm not posting this story to criticize the man, although if in a similar situation, I don't think I would've chosen the same tactic. Beyond the humorous absurdity of the predicament, I just think it's interesting to see how some people react to unpredictable moments.

I've been rushed by some aggressive geese before and, depending on the circumstances, I'll charge at them and wave my arms and am fully prepared to punt them through the uprights...which seems to back them down.

Man Uses Granddaughter as 'Weapon' to Thwart Aggressive Goose

November 01, 2022
By Tim Binnall

A wild video out of Taiwan shows the moment when a man and his granddaughter were pursued by an aggressive goose and the beleaguered grandfather wound up having to use the tot to bat away at the angry bird. The jaw-dropping encounter reportedly occurred in late October when the unnamed duo were visiting the Tainan Metropolitan Park, which is home to a gaggle of popular white geese. Their trip took a troubling turn, however, when one of the birds apparently took umbrage at them encroaching on its territory and began to go after the man's granddaughter. Witnesses say that the heroic grandfather quickly swooped in and picked up the youngster, but this only exacerbated the situation as the animal was now targeting both of them.

Footage captured by an astonished bystander features the culmination of the showdown wherein the man can be seen holding his granddaughter up to his chest as a rather large goose furiously stalks towards them. Anxiously backing away from the ornery animal, the grandfather finally resorts to desperate measures and proceeds to swing the youngster in the direction of the goose, which causes the little girl's dangling leg to whack the bird on its beak. The impromptu defense appears to have worked as the stunned creature subsequently gives up the fight and slinks away from the pair to rejoin its gaggle, which just may have been giggling at how their friend fared in the 'fight.'

As the years go forward he may not want "Granddaughter" to see this, especially if she's responsible for his care later in life. Smile

If the man and granddaughter were being attacked by a lethal threat, or even by something that could seriously injure a child, a bison or elk, an alligator, a dog, a human... yeah, I'd be right there with you in being outraged by this behavior. I don't know how many serious injuries or deaths occur from geese attacks, but my gut tells me it's pretty low... so I see this as more of a nuisance confrontation with wildlife, and therefore not a serious threat.

A different article on this incident claims that several geese in this park are named, and the assailant in this attack is named Beckham.

I've had my share of run-ins with critters, both in urban and remote wilderness settings, and of the threats I've faced, geese are loud and obnoxious, but rank fairly low.

It's not about seriousness of the threat. It's about an adult using the baby as a shield, a weapon.

What choice did he have? Set the kid down and try to chase the goose off himself?
Don't see many sticks or rocks around!
Any alternative would have left the kid in danger, this way she served very well as a weapon against a goose! Way to go Dad!

And another able bodied bystander just kicking back taking videos? Instead of helping grandpa keep the kid safe, let’s just video tape the event; could be useful if the goose sues or something?

My wife would disagree with you from personal experience. They are very aggressive and have the bill to pay for hurting you.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." If it were me there, I would have kicked the goose's ass or wrung its neck, or even just run away. I wouldn't be swinging my baby to kick its ass.

I wish someone would have stepped in to help preventing the body swing of the kids foot into the goose.

When I was a kid (12-13) we had a lot of animals. Horses, dogs, cats and geese. There was one goose that used to terrorize me occasionally. One morning I was headed out to feed the horses and he came after me. I took off running but said to hell with this and turned around and kicked him as hard as I could, caught him right on the neck. He never bothered me or anyone else again but he never did sound quite right after that.

It’s a goose. Just grab the damn thing by the neck and yeet it into the next county. I’ve been “bitten” by aggressive geese before and it’s just not that painful. I’d step between one and any kid before using one as a bludgeon.
