I rarely talk about work stuff here as this place is a good escape for me.
I have been at this quite awhile I have seen a lot, some things that many people can’t even imagine. I lost my beat partner in the line of duty when he took a call for me because I was scheduled to go home early and he wanted me to be home with my wife. Honestly, Not much gets me anymore but when it does man does it hit like a sledge hammer.

Last call of the year for me was a 911 call with an open line and lots of screaming. An elderly gentleman was in the process of passing away. His wife of many more years than I have even been alive was beside herself with grief as the medics and my partner tried to save him.
She knew that he would not make no matter how hard they tried. She collapsed in my arms with grief crying and saying she can’t live without him. I could do nothing but hold her, pray for her, and her family, and fight back my tears.

I got home, hopped in the shower, prayed some more, and lost it.

Not the way I wanted to end my year.

You were there for her, although she knew it was his time.

Thank you for your strength and caring.

Bless you.

Grab the wife and kids and give them a big hug, and focus on the love that woman had for her husband. I know you get to see plenty of examples of the other.

Peace to you, know that you help her, and her husband. I'm sorry for her sadness and the pain you had not being able to change the outcome.

Know this, you being there for her was a blessing to her, because you may have eased her pain.

I pray for you, to have strength. I pray for her to have comfort.

You were there in her time of need. Take comfort in that.

That is a tough thing Black. I am sorry you had to have that on your shoulder. But you obviously are a good man and provided for her in the moment that she needed it the most. God Bless you brother. I am glad you shared this.

Black,
If I were the elderly gentleman, it would have been comforting to know someone who cared was supporting my wife. Thank you for your compassion.

Absolutely.

Man, I'm sorry you had to be there for that. But I'm glad for the widow that it was you and not someone who couldn't care.

You were there. You cared. You tried. Hard, more than I can imagine but thank you for being there. That could have been my mom, my family or one day my wife. Time moves on, and I pray that compassion and empathy Becomes more common.

That's not a lot of nothing and it is as important as what the medics were doing. It sucks, it really does but you did what you could do. That widow will forever remember what you did. When my time comes I hope someone like you is there for my wife.
