A devastating incident occurred in Syosset, Long Island, where a 59-year-old local auto mechanic, Joseph DeLucia Jr., tragically shot and killed four family members before taking his own life. The heartbreaking event took place during a family gathering that was supposed to focus on the future of their mother's home following her recent passing.

The Incident
The DeLucia family had gathered at the longtime home of Theresa DeLucia, who was 95 years old. The siblings planned the meeting to discuss the house sale and celebrate a family member's birthday. However, things took a tragic turn when Joseph Jr., fearing that he would lose his home while also believing he had been left out of his mother's will, opened fire.

Joseph Jr. fired 12 rounds from a shotgun, tragically taking the lives of Joanne Kearns, 69, from Tampa, Florida; Frank DeLucia, 64, from Durham, North Carolina; and Tina Hammond, 64, and her daughter Victoria Hammond, 30, both from East Patchogue, Long Island. After the shooting, Joseph Jr. went onto the front lawn, shouting about his actions, before taking his own life.
Subsequently, the police revealed that Joseph Jr.'s fears were unfounded. The family had assured him that he would be cared for, even though he would have to leave the house. Authorities later discovered that Theresa DeLucia had included all of her children in her will, and Joseph Jr. was not left out.

History of Mental Health Challenges
Joseph DeLucia Jr. was reported to have had a history of mental health challenges. According to neighbors, they were concerned about his well-being when he was heard by neighbors yelling during what they described as mental health episodes. The police were called to Joseph's home only once for a wellness check, and there were no indications that he was in danger.

Following the tragic events, neighbors expressed shock and disbelief. Randy Marquis, a neighbor of over ten years, told Yahoo.com that Joseph Jr. seemed sad and confused after his mother's passing. She stated, "We had no idea this was coming. If we knew he would do this, we would have said something, of course, we would."

Tragic End
This tragedy underscores the importance of mental health awareness and early intervention, especially during times of loss and transition. It's a sobering example that even those closest to us may be silently struggling with fears and insecurities. As the DeLucia family mourns this unimaginable loss, it also raises difficult questions about how we can better recognize the warning signs in those we care about — and take action before it's too late.

While nothing can undo the sorrow of this event, the hope moving forward is that it will inspire more compassion, vigilance, and support for individuals facing mental health challenges.
