Hello, I am a 50ish YO man and have some very mild BP problems and take some BP meds in the evening,
My problem is I can not seem to get any energy in the mornings for my workouts. I sleep well , 8+ hours, i down a pint of water with lemon when I wake, eat nothing (drink 2-4 cups of coffee after that) and then go to work out and have no energy . I have tried 2x amount of every workout powder that wal mart sells and no luck, have tried green tea also.
any suggestions for that pre workout energy ??

thanks, shawn

What is your resting heart rate, and have you been tested for arrhythmia?

Different people's energy levels peak at different times. Have you tried working out in the afternoon or evening instead of first thing in the morning?

Unless you're specifically targeting fasted cardio sessions (in which case, yup, you gotta suck it up buttercup and do it anyway), many people prefer afternoon/after work gym sessions, especially for strength training. May be worth considering.

This is me usually. Just no energy/motivation to do it early. I was doing lunch workouts for a while, then my work schedule changed & threw me off, and I haven't been able to get back into a good rhythm.

Workout powder? Creatine monohydrate? Energy usually comes down to brain energy. Motivation should come naturally but sometimes we have to force it and wake it up.

When I need an energy boost, which is often, I take Kratom, an herbal supplement from SE Asia. Strain is important. White Vein strain gives the most energy, but if that's too strong Green Vein gives a more balanced boost.

I actually use Green Vein the most.

Well then, pitter patter. With all due respect, it isn't easy and it isn't supposed to be. Consistently training is hard. If you don't feel like it, too bad, do it anyway. Energy isn't where you want it to be? Too bad, do it anyway. The best way to combat the "I dun wannas" is to, you guessed it: suck it up and do it anyway. Figure out a schedule, plan on 4 days a week minimum, and stick with it come hell or high water no matter what for 6-months. After that it gets a bit easier because you will have built in the muscle memory/consistency. It really is that simple. That doesn't make it easy.

Another part of this that may need looking at, especially at your age (I am also 50-ish), is a complete blood panel (I mean EVERYTHING, including hormone levels, liver function, A1C, all of it). Get with your doc and get it scheduled, or do it on your own from your local LabCorp or similar independent lab.

Finally, the part nobody likes the most: diet & supplementation. What are you eating, when are you eating? Are you tracking caloric intake, macros, etc? What supplements are you taking, if any?

I don't want to sound like Debbie Downer, but I'd be a little concerned about reactions to the BP meds. I wonder about 2-4 cups of coffee. I too have slightly high BP, but no meds. I was consistently drinking 3 cups of very strong coffee, but I've committed to only 2. I also do primarily cardio; walk/jog alternating with bike riding and a weight routine 2x a week.

As for my energy, sometimes I don't feel like exercising, but once I start, my body accepts it. Big Grin

On weekends I work out early in the mornings but I eat a regular breakfast. Is there a reason you aren’t eating at all after getting up and before heading out?

Start working out at 0500. That requires getting up 0400-0430 to workout.

I found that after a month of doing this seven days a week it got easy.

For most of my life I was on an evening workout schedule. Then the job & commute situation changed a few years ago. I'm older than you.

I get up just before 5am, then immediately eat a light-ish cereal breakfast with OJ and milk. No caffeine in the morning. Aerobics (elliptical and rowing), free weights, balance exercises for an hour plus -- starting around 6:30. Then off to what the day brings. My caffeine comes right after the gym, and keeps going for much of the day.

Consider food in the morning and back off on the coffee before the workout. Your body needs fuel to workout, as in real food.

No, definitely not on Amazon... Kratom is a scheduled (illegal) drug in some states, including mine, and regulated in many others.

Even if it's not illegal or regulated in your area, it's not safe for folks with BP issues. It's a strong stimulant whose side effects include tachycardia (irregular heart beat) and hypertension (raised BP).
