Pretty sure these have to be purchased while the vehicle is still under factory warranty.
Don’t have the scratch to buy one that new.

I see this as a mathematical problem.

Used + New Engine (with warranty) = $A

Used without engine issue = $B

If $B - $A > $5K then choose A. Else choose B.

A presented "opportunity" (such as a good used Sig P320 at $300) vs a known performer (such as a H&K P30L at $500) creates an emotional reaction also. Risk of failure can lead to obsessive listening to every clickety clack of the GM engine. Not worth it to me. Performance differences (again, the light and consistent trigger pull vs. the DA / SA) are best managed by setting your expectations. If you can adjust your expectations, then the proven performer is a better choice.

It's kind of depressing to hear about automotive quality these days. I've been putt-putting along in my 2004 Ford Ranger since I bought it new in 2004. Currently at 229,000 miles. Replaced the alternator last year. Other than wear items (batteries, tires, brakes, etc) it's been reliable. Has the little I-4 engine.

Get what you want with the most liberal factory warranty you can buy.

I did exactly that expecting the phaser issue or electronic gremlin. I got a factory reman trans w/ 3year warranty for $100. Reportedly $7-$9000 first experience with the extended warranty.

I’ve decided it’s just going to be part of any new vehicle I buy.

For all the needed room for kids, dog and luggage, you need to buy a towable or, consider a Transit van, Sprinter or something similar. Not for driving off road, not for a daily driver. You simply require a larger vehicle.

I recently read on the interwebz that GM no longer wants the 6.2 engines to use 0w20. I don't recall if they recommend 5wsomething or 0w40 now but there has been a change. Just looked and it is 0w40 now.

Are you open to "alternative" choices? We also have a 2105 suburban that has been a rock, my wife loves it. We have 215k and the odometer and going strong with regular amsoil changes.
I race dirt bikes and all my friends haul bikes in Mercedes and Freightliner Sprinter vans. After riding with them to a race in Mexico(from colorado) I went out and purchased one. I got the 15 pax, high room model and I absolutely love it. My wife does as well. Sometimes we have to haul the whole cross country or volleyball team, 15 seats no problem. Sometimes she has to haul ALL the gear bags for highschool volleyball, remove the seats and boom enough cargo space for 45 gear bags. Wanna go dirt biking, leave the seats out and put 3 bikes plus gear in the back. It is so versatile.
The only complaint my wife has is that as a tall roof, she can't fit in the taco bell drive through. But they make the sprinter in 2 roof heights, regular and tall, and 3 lengths, 144",170" and 170 extended.I have the 170".
Since the suburban is getting up there in miles I have been looking at replacing it with a low roof, short wheelbase sprinter. Seating for 12 and tons of cargo space, plus we keep a camper potty in the way back for errant bathroom breaks.
The sprinter drives better than the suburban, steers easier, hauls more, sits higher, and is way more comfortable than the suburban. It's very non traditional, but once you buy one, you will be hooked. Not to mention I have a dvd player in the dash that is hooked up to a killer sounds system, and feeds a 32 tv just behind the driver seats. Also, cheaper than a suburban and fully customizable. Just .02 if you want to think oustside the norm. Test drive one before you just dismiss the idea as crazy, you wont be diappointed, of course my kids think I embarrass the hell out of them when I pick up from carpool, but all their friends love riding in the "party van".

Beware, a known problem on the Sprinter is the fuse box. Fuse box bad

I bought extended warranties when I purchased both my new 2005 and 2014 Toyota Tundras.
Never used or needed either one of them.

The 2005 the air pump went out and repaired at 95K miles.
The 2014 has had the cam tower leak at 105K miles.
Still going strong at currently 130K miles.

I would have been leery of the new Toyota turbo V6 a few years ago, but it seems they've fixed the problem.

When my 2014 dies, I'll be looking at a Toyota Sequoia, probably a slightly used if I can find one.
Hopefully I'll get several more good years out of my 2014.
No way I'd buy a Ford or GM product these days.

“Yes” on the 2021 Yukon XL, as the “unlimited mileage powertrain coverage” will provide you with peace of mind in that regard.

Be sure it's transferrable....

SIL has a 6.2 but it wasn't in the group with this problem in his Yukon, bought it used from a trade in at his Subaru Dealership.

If the warranty is transferrable it would relieve that issue, if not, I would run.

Basically my approach is if it's built in the last 5 or 10 years, lease it, too much tech in these vehicles to take a chance/risk.

The warranty is provided by the individual dealership as part of the vehicle purchase.

As long as you're comfortable with the dealers backing the replacement, and it's in writing, it's probably not a bad buy, but it isn't really a new engine, it's a long block with all the 65K mile parts put back on.

What exactly does the warranty cover, is it just the long block parts, what labor, again if it covers what you like and you can add an extended warranty for the electronic bits, which jmo are the more important problems long term it sounds like a good opportunity.

You have 215k miles on the original engine and transmission?

Funny you mention the Sprinter we parked near one gussied up with A/T tires and the like and my youngest was all in saying I have to get one for Mom.
Wife said absolutely not.

Yeah, I've been quietly following your saga without saying much so as not to anger the gods. Mine has been rock solid, only a few minor repairs.
My wife said no way to the sprinter at first as well. I vetoed her and bought it anyway, now she drives it more than me. She is currently on a road trip with it to move my oldest into college, one trip, everything loaded in the back. And like I said, once she figured out it drove easier in parking lots than the suburban, she was sold. Sits up real high so she can see, has a tighter turning radius and the back up cam is mounted up high so it makes backing in super easy.

Lucky. I am not overly concerned with the motor since I have run the Range and am religious with fluid changes.

Transmission is my biggest worry as it is very very angry around 1-2 shifts and 2-1 shifting it’s really pissed especially down hill.

Also have had some rust pop in the rockers under both rear doors.

It’s a good looking vehicle and it’s a great riding car on the interstate. However interstate is not much for us except trips.
We are mostly around town. I have replaced so much on it, it still has a bit of value in it and at this point rather get that value out of it and move on to something newer.
As I have no desire to address the rust.
