Would you buy a vehicle that had a full engine replacement under recall/warranty?

This is essentially my mindset 100% anymore unfortunately when it comes to my wife’s main vehicle.

Yes, she is picky in regard to options and colors which makes the search a bit more challenging and a little more money out of my pocket but she is a phenomenal woman and I don’t mind getting her what she wants.

. You carry way to much crap if a Sequoia ain't enough. 1999 Was the last great year of the Suburban. You will continually be plagued with issues and overpaying substantially buying another later model GM that someone else dumped because it was a pos. Kind of like you plan to do with your current one. Ymmv

I can't speak to the makes/vehicles/engines specifically under consideration. That said

then I'd not exclude a car having had an engine replaced under recall from consideration.

Wife won’t let me get rid of any of the kids, I already tried!

2 with Celiac so a decent size cooler always has to go with us to make sure we have food for them.
Folding chairs, swim bags, soccer bags, football bags. The list goes on and on.

Watching some of the YT mechanic channels, there are problems from the factory on manufacturer engines. Another factor is the quality of work the tech that installed the engine does. There are plenty of dealer “repairs” fixed by independent mechanic shops. I’d rather rely on a quality build my a good mechanic. I just do not trust dealerships these days, especially those who pay by the job since the incentive is to slap it together as soon as possible and move n to the next job.

Why not get a suburban with the 5.3, they are not part of the recall and the lifter issues were limited to 2021 and earlier 2022 models. Unless you are towing over 7500 lbs.

5.3s are in the search too.
Just came across this Denali close to home, good color combination, decent price.
The Denali’s look the best and they don’t have that awful wart of a screen protruding off the top of the dash.

5.3s have engine/lifter issues too across more than just 2021s and 2022s. All these motors with cylinder deactivation are nightmares even the Hondas of the are not bypassed or truly deleted all together.

I only mention this because it might be good to get a "bumper to bumper" instead of just powertrain.

Fair enough, their stuff has problems as well but at least some of their drivetrain combos are pretty reliable compared to GM and Ford.

Yes and no.
No matter what we end up with I will be getting a supplemental warranty to 150k miles that covers most of the electronics and non wear items.
There are so many electronics in everything these days.

Then we’re in the same boat! Our family vehicle (2013 Sienna) is nearing end of life, and I’m torn about what to replace it with. Everything newer is plagued with problems ie the new turbo motors, the Toyota 8-speed trannies, etc.

I’ve tried to convince her to consider a restomod something or other, but she just rolls her eyes. I do at least have a squarebody dually for my own enjoyment.

My WRX Hatchback was that. A full engine replacement under warranty at the dealership. It was just at the end of the warranty. Previous owner also had the transmission gone through and new clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and full brake job, including replacing both rear calibers. With an extended warranty.

Six months after he traded it in. I have/had all maintenance records, every oil change, every thing all done at one of two Subaru dealerships.

I had the remaining of that warranty, and was offered an extension of 3 years 30,000 miles at a very good price. So, I ended up with a practically new car, with 4 years and 38,000 miles warranty ( the 3 years/30,000 miles of the new warranty, and the remainder of the previous owners )

So, for me it was a no brainer! I got the car, year, make, model, and color ( Rally Blue), a better then new warranty, and a good price!

I very rarely have wins like that! It has been the most reliable vehicle that I have ever owned. Yeah, I have had a couple of small issues, and a couple of recalls, but it's been reliable. Plus it's very fun to drive!

Just my opinion, but the 6.2 is a time bomb. My cousin had his Chevy truck at the dealership for some minor throttle body cleaning service and his engine actually shit the bed while they had it! Your options are slim unfortunately. My 4Runner is having some work done to it and the dealer gave me a new Tundra for a loaner. What a POS, I’m not impressed. The turbo V6 is annoying. In a sports car..? Sure, but having driven the previous Tundra’s 5.7, this things a turd. Toyota has really made some bad decisions with their new Taco’s and Tundra’s.

If you do end up with another Chevy, make sure you contact Todd Sutherland at Thompson Auto (todds@thompsonauto.net). He will beat any dealer on a genuine GM warranty. He is easily half of what going direct to GM would be.

For example, I got the platinum package with 250 deductible for 72 months/72000 miles, added to my original 3/36000 warranty for $2300.00. Gm wants over $4500.00 for same package.

I think the current 6.2 truck motor woes are pretty well fixed by the thicker oil, and if you're going to get rid of the AFM right away you won't have to worry about that set of problems either. I don't think I'd be scared off by a new motor that started with both of those fixes from mile 1 especially with the powertrain warranty.

Agreed, I had a TBI 350 87 Suburban in high school
A restomodded in good shape would be fun, but likely not cheap...
