I need some wiser input from a wiser crowd. I have the opportunity to get my employment upgraded to run a division of a printing company in Clarksville Tenn for a couple of years (just before I get to retire) for a new (to me) organization. How is life there? Decent rents? Good gun culture/competition scene? Negative aura? Target for next meteor impact? Any help or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Fight, Build, Destroy. Sappers Lead the Way!! |
Army moved me here two years ago. It's predominately a military town (101st Airborne) but is growing fast beyond that. There is a firestone plant, Amazon and Google facility nearby or being built. There's a few folks who commute to Nashville, and there's a small college. Location- GREAT!!!! Nashville is 45 minutes away, bowling green, KY is just over an hour, and tons to do. Land Between the Lakes is nearby for great recreation areas and fishing/hunting. Lots of ranges, Montgomery County Shooting Complex, Range 15/16 on post, Todd County Gun club, and several indoor ranges in town. Chris Swimm on here, and I shoot quite a few matches on post, or in Dickson with Music City Shooters (matches every weekend and several night leagues indoor during the week). MidSouth Shooters supply is local, so ordering ammo/reloading is easy, but sales tax takes the place of shipping and hazmat. The downtown area is really cool, with some pubs and breweries. Theres a local vineyard and distillery too, and tons of Amish farms, dairy's and meat markets for fresh foods. The downside, housing is in its own little bubble here. VA loans mean us Army folks can buy houses with no money down, and that means we tend to buy bigger than we need and could afford otherwise. The outskirts have lots of great rural property for good deals because military folks don't want to drive as far, but in town, it's pretty sporty when shopping for houses. Roads SUCK!!!!! Not the condition, but the flow of traffic. Too many roads are still 2 lane that need to be 4, and traffic lights on Tiny Town and Trenton can back traffic up for MILES. The schools are everywhere, and there's no way around some of them, so commutes just a few miles away can be shit. That's my biggest gripe about this place. _________________________ Trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up

Cannot speak specifically for Clarksville but can speak for middle TN. -Gun culture is great. Plenty of shops and ranges etc. -allergies are miserable if you are prone to that. -TN is a fairly inexpensive especially compared with NE. Like any municipality they will get their money as sales tax is high, car registration is annually etc. but all in all cheaper. -People are nice and they are talkative. That is offputting as hell at first for. Northerner. There is a slowness/lack of alacrity to most transactions with folks. It takes some time to get used to but once you do it’s actually really nice. -the weather can be....ENERGETIC at times. -The nature when it is nice out is breathtaking. Nice lakes etc. -Crime is about the same as anywhere, just research your specific spot. It’s not St. Louis or Chicago or Mogadishu on the Mississippi to be sure. Generally is fairly nice. -Clarksville is a military town -Folks in TN cannot drive....period. I have driven in Boston, Atlanta, New York, Baltimore/Washington etc. and I see stuff here that at this point doesn’t even upset me anymore. I just chuckle and think “haven’t seen that one before” -Nashville is a cool city with some great attractions and good resteraunts, theater etc. -The Lane motor museum and the Corvette museum are must sees if you are a car guy -Jack Danials is a must see period. -if you settle far from job try to get a feel for your commute. Fair amount of traffic in middle TN -There is culture shock. Coming out of the North/Northeast things have a different flow here. Not bad as much as we Northern folks are generally assholes and we function well with other as assholes. Here they are much nicer and frankly that’s hard sometimes. -Gas is running in the 2.45-2.60 range for regular. -The occasional Gulf Hurricane will cause fuel availability issues here. -No state tax. Those are some stream of consciousness thoughts from somebody who moved from the North. "Guns are tools. The only weapon ever created was man."

Good place to marry a stripper. If you are older than 19 and have lived away from home for more than a few months maybe you can avoid this pitfall.

Wasn't it the subject of The Monkees' hit "Last Train to Clarksville"? "If you’re a leader, you lead the way. Not just on the easy ones; you take the tough ones too…” – MAJ Richard D. Winters (1918-2011), E Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne "Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil... Therefore, as tongues of fire lick up straw and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust; for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel." - Isaiah 5:20,24

Uh, in printing way back when God was a child, in prepress the folks making all the magic for the press to print, were "Strippers" as in assembling film pieces to make a plate. With that said, I WAS the stripper and fortunately already married. My mother loved telling all her friends that I was a stripper. You can't pick your family... I was stationed there in 2007-2010. I'd retire there in a heartbeat. I lived up on Tiny town road across from the (then) New Movie theatre. It's a hrybrid town, part military, part college, part commercial. The weather was mild to me, I'm a native New Yorker. Folks didn't drive in the snow well, but it didn't snow too often. Housing was down right affordable I paid $530 a month for a nice sized one bedroom with washer, dryer, kitchen. Ft Campbell lost 2 BDEs so there should housing available. When I first got there, we were taking the deploying guy's apartments and then they were taking ours when they retuned. they built out a number of complex's to house us. There is a decent mall, the downtown (college area) had some decent restaurants and bars. There was a really good German place run by a soldiers widow. Shooting, I used to shoot on post every weekend I wanted to. There were several gunshops and at least one gunsmith in the area. When I was there, there was only 2 strip clubs and 1 adult book store. The one strip club with the midget burned down. It was actually one of the cleaner posts I found in CONUS. I was used to Victory Drive on Benning (you could get inhalation AIDS there) where there strip clubs, hock shops and pay day loans as far as the eye can see. Some of the trailer parks were off limits and there are drugs in the AO, but nothing overt. We did have dopers come off the interstate once and kick in a couple doors when we were at work. They got my computer and my change jar. Don't live next to a ramp if you can avoid it. there are also a couple gated communities in the area. Nashville was great on the weekends. I'd go back in a heart beat.

I was stationed at Ft Campbell from 2003 to 2007, which is right next to Clarksville. My wife loved it there so much she is pushing to retire there when the time comes. We have friends living there and though the place has grown it is still a great place to live. If you go there make sure you go to Blackhorse downtown for their pizza.

No info on Clarksville exactly, but just Middle TN as a whole, coming from a born a raised FL native. - These people couldn't drive if you put a gun to their head - Any kind of weather shuts down everything - Housing is MUCH more expensive than it was in FL - This may offend some, but a LARGE amount of people you'll run into are slow, if not borderline stupid...and this is coming from FL, where people aren't historically rocket scientists. - These country folk seem to be sensitive and offend easy, and a large portion are not punctual/are lazy. On to the good stuff: - Side by sides can be made street legal, and I have a blast with mine! - Less law enforcement around busting balls than in FL - Fun things to do within a reasonable driving distance - Far less "diversity" where I live than in FL, by a LONG shot IDPA ESP SS

My wife wants to sell everything and move to TN as well, generally the Nashville metro area suburbs. Her dad lives an hour south of Nashville. I do know the NFA laws are pretty generous there and if you can afford it you can buy or make it. Housing and taxes are another reason.

I do not live in middle TN, but I am country folk. I wish I could bring myself to be offended by your post but I guess I am just too slow and lazy to work up a good fury over this. How about you just come out and tell us country folk what is on your mind. I bet you could even shed some light on your diversity comment that could spark some entertaining debate as well.

Being a former Northerner and now being middle TN: - Driving, dear God yes, these people cannot merge for shit!!! - Traffic is getting bad, the growth is outpacing the roads - no state income tax is nice - weather here is awesome. Yes it can be a little volatile, but "bad" winter weather here is still just a mild fall day in Michigan - My property taxes here are 1/3 of what they were in Michigan and my house here is twice the square footage - Yes the talkative people, my God when I first moved here I wanted to punch someone. But that's how it is, they are just being nice and I am getting chatty myself now. - I love living here, have no desire to leave. My kid loves his school, the weather is wonderful, lots to do, cost of living is reasonable, more than some places but less than many - Gun laws are good, CCW laws are good. I wish there was a good private gun club near me, but there are a few nice ranges. Don't weep for the stupid, or you will be crying all day

Interesting how several "former northerners" responded about bad driving, overly talkative people, lack of "diversity" (what ever that means)and slow or stupid country people. Welcome to The South. I'd say more but my mother raised me to be polite to guests.

Well as a life long Middle Tennesseean (63 years) I'll share some random thoughts and have a little fun in the process... We drive just fine until you inject a bunch of foreigners. You just don't understand how we roll... We have some of the best roads in the country... just a little crowded due to the influx of foreigners. A trucker magazine a few years ago voted Tennessee Interstates the best in the US based on condition, scenery and amenities. Most of us South, East and West of Clarksville consider Clarksville Kentucky. I have a tee shirt that says... "TENNESSEE... at least we ain't Kentucky" We can't just up and move our trailer homes as needed anymore... "The Man" makes us tie them down now. There are three distinct Tennessee's. Middle, East and West. Never tell someone you are from Tennessee. You are from Middle, East or West Tennessee. If someone does tell you they are from "Tennessee" they are probably a City boy, Democrat or foreigner. The pros break it down farther as in Southern Middle Tennessee, but that's beyond the expectations required of a foreigner. Tea here is sweet. Yes, most of us here like a little tea in our sugar water... Unsweet tea is just tea we ain't finished makin' yet. If you do ask for unsweet tea here you may be asked to provide a Doctors note stating that for health reasons you can't have Sweet Tea. If not Sweet Tea, we mostly drink Dr Pepper or Mountain Dew. None of that sissy stuff like Coke or Pepsi. Ain't, Y'all, All y'all, You all and many many more really are in common daily use. Don't point it out to us if you find it odd, it might not end well for you. Don't talk at us fast, we don't like that and will largely ignore you. It's not that we are slow, it's just how we roll. We ain't as dumb, or as forgiving, as we might look or sound, seriously, be careful or you may just find that out the hard way, without warning. We mostly only offend easily when it comes from a foreigner. We DO have a state income tax, but on unearned income only. Interest and dividends etc but it is in process of being phased out from 5% to 0 by 1% a year. It might affect you if you have a large retirement fund depending on how it is invested. I paid over 1k for '17. We usually hit ~zero degrees once per winter and ~100 once per summer. Yes. Allergies. Due to being one of the most flora diverse states in the country. Sales tax approaching 10% Rednecks and Hicks and are a real thing, and common, it's not an insult unless it comes from a foreigner. Also III%ers, patriots, survivalist, white supremacist, and racist are all around if you look for them... and trust me you do not want to look for most of them. A Junk car in the yard is an easy way for you foreigners to earn some cred with us, and yes I have one. Whitetail hunting! Either with Bow, Gun, or Minivan is a popular pastime. I have bagged one with my Car and one with my Jeep. Weather shutdowns... we live for em'. Not because we can't function necessary, but rather as an excuse to miss work or school, go hunting or etc. You ARE required to go by Krogers first for milk and bread. We believe in helping out our neighbor or even a stranger... without him asking. Sadly, metro Nashville and a couple other areas are going pro sanctuary city. But most of the state is firmly red. My district voted almost two to one for Trump. The Castle Law now extends to your vehicle here. The TVA is God... To here our parents talk. Unions are around but not that big of a thing here. Best you just don't bring it up in polite conversation. My car tags are $29 a year. And last but not least... Bless Your Heart and Welcome! You probably weren't invited and ain't necessarily wanted so please act accordingly. PS: When we say "foreigner" we are just being polite... what we really mean is Damn Yankee. Repeat, all in good fun guys! Mostly Collecting dust.

^^^^^ A lot of the above would apply to non-urban Texas, too. I've been here 37 years now. I did learn one thing in my USAF days, moving all around the country--most folks don't like hearing how you did things where you came from. Avoid doing that and you'll probably get along just fine. flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth
