Looking for banjo recommendations
for 18 yr old who thinks she would like to learn to play. She's already pretty good with the ukulele.

Would prefer to buy from Amazon for convenience & shipping, around $100 or so. Any recommendations appreciated.

Don't know what you will find for $100. If you are welling to spend more check out the Deering Good Time banjo's.

I'm not a banjo player, but I know some here are. I do know this is a good make, but it's more than you want to spend. If your daughter is serious about it, you may want to consider it though. As we've seen from many threads about musical instruments, buying cheap isn't always a good idea.

Not Amazon, but just as easy and trustworthy.

One of my patrol sergeants retired recently to Florida. For some reason his wife bought him a banjo to learn. apparently to fill his time so he didn't bother her all the time.

Worst part was the deliverance jokes he had to endure. Even more so I pitied his neighbors as for the 30 plus years I've know him, he didn't have an oz of musical talent.

Have you thought about renting with option to buy. Just a thought.

Thats what I did (rent) when my daughter wanted to play the flute in middle school.

$30 a month for about 9 mos when she stopped playing, vs ~$1000 to buy.

Brass and woodwinds cost a lot more than learner stringed instuments, and are worth renting. The deal swings very hard the other way with stringed, especially fretted instruments. A Deering is what you want to look at, OP.

Banjo recommendations?

Don't.

I find it hard to think you'll get a banjo worth having for $100. The Deering above gets suggested often as a good, but inexpensive instrument.

What's the difference between a banjo and a chainsaw?

A chainsaw has dynamic range.

A $100 banjo sounds terrifying to me. Hard to imagine they could even make one for that, let alone make one that sounded anywhere near decent.

Also, this is just one of my favorite images so I thought I'd post. I actually like a lot of bluegrass music and have some pretty well-known bluegrass musicians in the family.

Hey, hey now. It’s not like he was asking for a recommendation for an accordion. Come on, guys.

Big Grin

I really like the sound of a banjo with a guitar. Adds a lot of depth.

Renting might be a better option to see if she likes playing. Nothing will kill the ambitions of a player quicker then a cheep instrument that’s hard to keep in tune. $300-$500 is a great beginners banjo things to look for double truss rod inside the drum. Banjo Ben, Ross Nickerson the banjo teacher, depending on what style she wants to play three finger Scruggs style bluegrass, or claw hammer Grandpa Jones style. The open back banjo is lighter and easier to handle.
Banjo hangout is a great forum used banjos for sale there all the time.
