I have always seen horse racing referred to as the sport of kings, occasionally polo, fox hunting, or falconry, but never heard of tennis referred to that way. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I stand corrected. Everything at the college level is self call except for NCAA finals. Bad calls by players are common and have been known to cause players to jump the net.

Technology can't find enough places to stick it's ugly head in, and the people running things from companies to universities can't wait try to force AI into everything.... Some things just should be left alone....This message has been edited. Last edited by: HRK,

Baseball is a business. Like any business the bottom line is money. Those who own the business want as few mistakes as possible. I haven’t seen enough games to know if it irritates me or not.

LOL. I played college tennis too. I know what you're talking about. I even wore the Sergio Tacchini shorts... back in the day. "Some things are apparent. Angel Hernandez is responsible for this.

We finally get a chance to get rid of the blind umpires and suddenly we're full of nostalgia. I would give it to the new technology and never look back.

Pitchers and batters train all their lives to throw in a consistent area, and you want Angel Hernandez and ilk to enforce that? Heck no. The video alone shows why this is badly needed.

They blew it. First, camera reviews of close plays, they should have been doing for years, but not like they do it now. Umps just get together and talk while the guy upstairs reviews... they make like their chat is over and let it stand, or change it. None of this football like review BS. With this, the ump should be getting the call in an ear piece of some type of light system in his mask and signaling to the players and fans in the stands just like they always did. If the computer's going to decide balls and strikes, let it. No need to "change" the flow or look of the game. TWO umps calling balls and strikes clearly doesn't work.

| Why don’t you fix your little problem and light this candle |
The challenge system seems to be working out to be pretty fast for the pitches, like 2-3 seconds from the signal to the call. I watched it effect a game, kept a batter alive and then he drove in a few runs. So this could really change the game. I do think the strategy of it will 'settle' in as this progresses. If a player loses a call then it can definitely hurt the team. But those egregious calls of a ball that was a down the middle strike? Yeah, I know I wont miss those. Already the announcers are like "well Jim, he decided not to challenge but he maybe should have." It will be interesting to see how it evolves. I do like the ump behind the plate, so I hope we dont lose that. This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it. -Rear Admiral (Lower Half) Joshua Painter Played by Senator Fred Thompson

I am all for anything that can reduce the duration of a MLB game to 3.5 hours or less. This isn't one of those things.

Keep in mind, and depending on who's pitching/catching you can catch the ump missing calls. For example: As one of the commenters points out, umpire strike-zones tend to have rounded corners, whereas ABS has sharper corners; the area that pitchers like Greg Maddox thrived on. Having a sharp catcher like Bailey is bonus. Then there's games like below, where consecutive challenges Pretty good explanation of the confusion that this season will likely see

I just got back from an O’s spring training game in Sarasota. A couple of ball/strike calls were challenged by the players. The ABS system resolved the calls within a few seconds. The effect on length of the game was negligible. Every umpire has his own strike zone. Sometimes they blow the calls, badly. This is one way to make some of them right. _________________________ 2nd Amendment Defender The Second Amendment is not about hunting or sport shooting.

My understanding the team only gets two per game and is called by the players on the field. They are going to have to have the restraint to only ask when it’s a bad call in a meaningful situation. My issue is the system uses a 2 D plane while the strike zone is certainly 3D. What happens to the back door curve ball. Could be called a strike and the system sees it as outside. So far the pitch clock and even bigger bases have been a net positive for the game. Pitch clock certainly helps the game on TV while in person you can miss a half inning or more going to get food or use restroom. ------------------------------ Smart is not something you are but something you get. After they went to a man on 1st to start every extra inning, they're half way to banana ball already. Umps can be robots and I don't care anymore. Too many entertainment opportunities more interesting than baseball these days, baseball will probably not survive much past the boomer era. Unless on a radically different format or scale. High school ball is cheap and convenient and played for love of the game. Unless I need to see the next Ricky Henderson (like I did his rookie season from 50 feet away in outfield seats) I may have attended my last MLB game.

It's already changing the game and in a good way for the Phillies: https://x.com/js9inningsmedia/...633864877101437?s=20

I am waiting for sexy robots in short shorts to enter the game. Yelling at the ump was part of the game. I guess if you are a button down personality this change is for you. Obssessive compulsives love this change. I long for the days of Bill Veek who invented the fireworks in the scoreboard, putting a midget on the team to narrow the strike zone. A marine corps vet from WW two he would wave his wooden leg at the ump when he disagreed with the call. He brought tons of fans to watch the White Sox. I wont be hustling to see a robot behind the plate. Kicking sand in his face would probably destroy Mr. Robot

Has he called it out as racist and sued yet? Joe West also bears some responsibility.
