No straight party voting anymore.

It has been said that the Texas political scene is influenced by more than just the usual two political parties (Democrats and Republicans). It is influenced by four voting blocs or political tribes.

https://www.transparencytexas....ibes-that-run-texas/

Excerpt from the site above

Liberal Republicans:

This political tribe is the most powerful faction in the Texas House as it boasts the Speaker of the House and important members of House leadership. This tribe wields its considerable power by fast-tracking favored legislation and running out the clock on disfavored bills. This tribe is able to expand its already formidable power by coercing cooperation from moderate Republicans and by making alliances with Democrats.

Moderate Republicans:

By far the largest faction of Republicans, this group consists of the middle-of-the-road, go-along-to-get-along types. This tribe has more conservative instincts that the liberal leadership tribe, but often votes with the liberals to avoid being shut out of committee chairmanships and to avoid having their legislation ignored. This group typically boasts of strong conservative principles on the campaign trail, but allows themselves to get bullied by leadership into more liberal votes.

Conservative Republicans:

This group, self-described as the Texas Freedom Caucus, inhabits the opposite end of the political spectrum from Democrats and frequently opposes the liberal Republican House leadership as well. While fewer in number than the other political tribes, this faction is often able to exhibit out-sized influence by its sheer willingness to fight and its alliance with grassroots voters.

Pick your brand of republican; Liberal – Moderate – Conservative.

Short of choosing between multiple candidates, no.

Well, I see Dan Patrick, the Lt Gov, is asking for my vote and promising to take action to put some reasonable limits on property evaluations which affect how much the local pols can raise property taxes. Especially important if one is on a fixed income. Local government will naturally oppose as well as school districts. Some say business will oppose as well because they feel they may be targeted to make up the difference. The gov and Lt. gov promise to help out the citizens and keep the taxes from escalating.

Oh wait! That’s how Patrick got into politics several years ago! He promised to do something about prop tax. People were thrilled and elected him. So what the heck happened last session? Well, they just didn’t have time. You see, Dan Patrick developed this creepy obsession with other mens genitalia. Yes sir, the biggest craze sweeping Texas is to for men to dress up in women’s clothing and go hang in womens restrooms for nefarious purposes. There otta be a law to stop this widespread outrage dammit!

What? There are already laws against assaulting women and children? What? This sort of thing just doesn’t happen? But all we heard everyday on the news was Patrick telling us how had he was working to stop this restroom outrage. Finally, as the session was drawing to a close, the gov and Patrick pretended to do something about prop tax. They made a half assed effort. The gov even extended the session to make it look good.

Remember when a presidential candidate, when questioned about his plans for a sluggish economy, only talked about flag burning? How did that work out? Trying to avoid an issue by drawing attention to a distasteful social issue is a common political tactic isn’t it? Smokescreen to cover lack of action?

Guess someone threatened to withhold some campaign money if the property tax issue was pushed.

Guess you can say I’m disappointed in the Dan Patrick. Wonder if there’s a republican running against him? Can’t see myself voting for a dem. Maybe there’s a republican who doesn’t have an unhealthy obsession with other men’s equipment that will oppose Patrick in the primary. Big Grin
