I watched "Raiders of the Lost Ark" this afternoon and got to thinking that watching the events that led to the disappearance of the Ark of the Covenant would be incredible. Since part of my Masters involved a short but fascinating period of studying Ice Age North America, I would have liked to have witnessed the last break-up of the Lake Missoula ice-dam, which released 500 cubic MILES of water across Eastern Washington State, carved out the Columbia river Gorge, and filled the Willamette Valley to a depth of 400 feet all the way down to Eugene.

Then back a couple of thousand years to see Mount Mazama as it blew its top - making Crater Lake in the process.

Add to that the Mackenzie River lava flows and you can see that American a few thousand years ago was not only noisy, it was pretty dangerous!
