Last night my wife and I ran out for some last minute things to bring to a friends house for thanksgiving.
We always park at the far end of the parking lot to avoid door dings to our car.

As I get out of the car I find a crumpled up $20.00 dollar bill on the ground.
I look around and there are no other cars or people around so my thought was someone had it in their pocket and when they removed their keys it fell out.

My first thought was to turn it in to the customer service desk, then I thought if no one came looking for it what would happen to the money.

My next thought was to wait if someone posted on line locally they lost the money and after confirming where, when, and how much to give it to them.

If that never happened Maybe I should give it to the local pan handler who works the same street corner off the main highway near my house or should I donate it to a local charity.

This is a lot of typing over a $20.00 bill but it is not my money, $20.00 is not going to change my life and maybe someone who needs it more than I do could gain from someone's else loss, what would you do?

Thanks

If you don't feel comfortable keeping it, I would donate it to a charity.

Buy something for someone who looks like they are having a shitty day.

Go to an arcade, put it on one of those little scan cards, and give it to a parent who is there watching the kids by themselves.

Put it on a coffee card for a local business and hand it to someone in line.

If you don't feel like pocketing it, it sounds like you want to do something for someone else or atleast thats what I'm reading in your words. Few things are as good as making someone else happy for no particular reason. You both get rewarded.

I found a $20 bill beside the sidewalk once, several years ago.

I looked around to see if someone might be searching for a lost $20. Didn’t see anyone.

Looked upwind and downwind for more. Didn’t see any.

Put the $20 in my billfold. Felt happy, and had no sense of guilt.

I saw some money on the floor at Lowes and asked another patron who was only a few feet away from it, if he dropped it and turns out he did. I figured it was his money so didn't consider trying to pick it up and keep it. I found 20 bucks once outside a gas station and it went into my pocket to many people in and out of the station to try and figure out who the money belonged too.

If it bothers you to keep the 20 bucks give it to someone you know could use it. I wouldn't give any money to any panhandler to possibly enable them to buy drugs, alcohol or cigarettes. Maybe a coworker or friend could use the 20 bucks or place it in the offering plate at church.

Big Grin

I had a joke for years that went something like this,

Years ago you would go to a fast food restaurant, place your order, pay cash and "you would get change".

Now you place your order see how much it is and the cashier would says "we take credit cards".

My my how times have changed.

Just make it quick and simple. How about put it back on the ground, anywhere? Someone will use it.

Want to hear a funny story? A few years ago, I was in a convenient store buying something. After fiddling around in the wallet and paid, I found a $20 bill right there where I was standing. I picked it up, walked out and gave it to the store's odd job helper. Only to find out after I got home that the bill was mine that I somehow dropped it on the floor. Big Grin

For a moment I thought about just leaving it hoping the person who lost it might come back, however it was around 9:00 at night and thought no one would come back to look in the dark.

The last money I found was in the Walmart self checkout. There was $80 sticking out of the thing that gives change. I called the attendant over to hand it in, figuring the previous customer would be back to claim it.

The attendant actually asked me how much of it I had used. I was a bit insulted.

At that point I would have asked to speak to their manager.

Call me cold but the last thing I’d do is give it to a panhandler. Too many of them are just scammers, one in particular I’d see every day at the same time for at least three years.

The corner he worked was conveniently near a MDOT Park and Ride, I always wondered what he drove. And, within a mile and a half of his corner was many job opportunities, for example, a Kroger, Home Depot, Menard’s, Sam’s Club, Target, Meijer, a large hospital, many small stores, gas stations and an industrial park, many of those had Help Wanted signs. But what should he work on the books, have to pay taxes, probably lose his Bridge Card and subsidized housing then?

Donate it to a local animal rescue if you are so inclined. Keep it in your wallet, if you see a person digging for change at a grocery store checkout line, there’s a use, Over hear a parent telling their child “I can’t afford that”, hand the twenty to the parent. Drop it in a church collection basket. Tip someone at a business you patronize for up and beyond the normal service, you’ll make their day. Donate it to a LOCAL food bank.

I wouldn't worry about it. It's only $20. I wouldn't give a panhandler a dime of my money. People that do are contributing to their drug and alcohol addiction. You want to do something for them, give them food. If it worries you, donate it to a charity.

Years ago I stopped giving money directly to the homeless.

One day back in the 90s I had given a few dollars to a woman looking to buy food for herself at a local convince store near my office.

Later in the day when I stopped at the same store to pick up somethin to drink I saw the same woman buying several packs of cigarettes.
When I confronted her I said that the money was for food, she told me to go "F" my self and she could do what ever she wanted with the money, and in a way she was right, however that was the last time I gave someone money directly.

My wife and I usually donate to established organization with a good track record on how donations are used.

Lately we have been donating clothing and household goods we no longer use to a church that runs a thrift store.

I'm there with you. My first thought as far as "changing someone's life" was... give it to a little kid. Though these days $20 isn't even going to do much for them.
