It certainly is possible to deactivate the auto-shutoff with an OBDII programming tool. The exact procedure will vary by manufacturer as with most deep-in-the-weeds OBD functions so you'd likely need a brand-specific programmer or a very expensive one (e.g. Snap-On). Plus, the procedure is likely to be "undocumented" and might affect your warranty.

On a side note there is no Twin Turbo V6. The Hurricane is an inline 6 with Twin turbos. They had some initial teething problems but since the thermostat housing was redesigned the engine has been very reliable. I think over the long haul it will become another one of their legendary engines.

This is going to eat the lunch of any 4runner, and unless you're doing a lot of road trips will fill the role supremely well.

While I am anxiously awaiting the R2 it is not for most people going to eat the lunch of the 4Runner or any gas powered offroad vehicle.

You have to get to and from the trail. Which takes a fair amount of your charge.
Paying to charge away from your house kills nearly all the cost benefit of an electric vehicle.

I have a 2014 Ford F150 with the 6 cylinder EcoBoost engine in it. I rented the 2015 version while on a trip (because Hertz f’d up my reservation, but that’s another story). It was pretty much identical aside from the then new aluminum body and the start-stop feature. As an experiment, I left it on for a tank of gas. I got a solid 2 miles a gallon LESS than on my steel bodied truck without it. Just one data point, but still.

Simpler engines will be more reliable. Easier to work on. And I’m betting, based on my limited experience, at least no worse mileage.

It can be, at least on Fords. Right now you can use Forscan to edit the programming and disable the auto stop/start.

When I decided on getting a gently used Mazda CX-5 last year, I debated between turbo and naturally aspirated. After a test drive, the N.A. seemed to have all the power I believed I'd need; it got better gas mileage and was supposedly less costly from a maintenance standpoint (and higher reliability). I looked until I found a 2024 model that didn't have the engine shutoff (Mazda had a shortage of chips that year and sent out a number that didn't have the feature as a result). I've been very happy with the power and the constant on/off that drives me crazy in my wife's Volvo.

Glad to see they're restoring options once more.

Rivan? I was looking at someone's (CR?) reliability ratings the other day and they were way down, if not at the very bottom.
