I can’t say I agree with you downtownv. I certainly have no problem with having the exam in English only. I just don’t think it should be a requirement so long as offering other languages isn’t a hindrance. If you have the means, there’s no reason not to. Especially in large cities where finding enough staff that is multilingual isn’t difficult. Theres an old joke, What do you call someone who speaks only one language? The answer of course is American. I’m curious what the rest of the members think though.

As long as the test includes the ability to read and understand traffic-related signage in English, I'm fine with multi-lingual testing being available.
REQUIRING that it be provided is another issue seeing as that directly affects funding requirements.

Oh brother. That American joke is hilarious except nobody gives a shit if you speak Spanish and English. The issue is that offering foreign language tests is only necessary because there is a large segment of society that can’t speak English. That is a problem.
Come to America the legal way and learn English. Speak your own language as much as you want but govt tests/jobs/etc should be in English. Integrate.
Can’t read? Well there is a fix for that. If I move to fucking Spain I don’t expect them to cater to my linguistic black hole.

I have no argument that they should learn the language but driving is going to be a necessity sooner than most are going to be capable of learning. If you choose not to learn the language, fine, as long as you don’t take the position that your new country needs to cater to you because of it. pedropcopia I didn’t see your last sentence until I posted this, I guess it wasn’t necessary, we both seem to be on the same page.

It is reasonable to demand a reasonable level of English proficiency to obtain a drivers license. In addition, there should be a demonstrated set of skills. Sadly, many lifelong English speakers would fail the skills test.

When my parents immigrated to the United States from Germany, there were multiple requirements:
1) you had to have a sponsor family that housed you, fed you, and helped you acclimate to our culture.
2) you had to have, and prove, that you would not be a burden to society. For example, you had to prove you had a trade, special talents, etc.
3) you were required to begin the process to become a US citizen. You had to abandon your former Citizenship from the country from which you came.
4) you had to learn English.
What changed?

Good. Watching all these police shows, OP Live, etc…..and way too many drivers suddenly, no speaka da English.
I have said for many years now, if the person is getting a US license, they should at least be able to speak basic English.
How to they know what the traffic signs mean? How do they interact with LE during a traffic stop?

I came to the conclusion years ago when dealing with non English speaking people that when faced with “cuanto dinero” suddenly the language barrier fades away.
