Had news of an active shooter situation this morning, and the latest is that a person went into a dentist office and shot his wife, then a citizen with a concealed carry permit stopped him.

BREAKING: One person dead in dentist office shooting

KINGSPORT, Tenn. -- One person died as a result of a domestic dispute at a dentist office on Clinic Drive in Kingsport, according to Sullivan County Sheriff Jeff Cassidy.

Cassidy said that an unidentified man entered the David Guy DDS office and shot his wife Wednesday morning. The woman was an employee of the dentist office. Police are not releasing the identities of the suspect or the victim until the family has been notified.

A civilian at the office with a concealed carry permit disabled the suspect. Cassidy said the individual was a hero and thanked him, but declined to release his name at this point in the investigation.

The suspect was taken to an area hospital with gunshot wounds. The woman died from her injuries, according the Cassidy.

Police say that there is no danger to the public. Cassidy said it took close to six minutes for police to arrive on the scene.

The Sullivan County Sheriff's Office, Kingsport Police Department and Tennessee Highway Patrol are still on the scene.

Michelle Mohammed, who works at the Marathon gas station near the dentist office, said she did not hear any gun shots and did not know anything had happened until she saw multiple the police cars heading to the scene.

Stay with the Herald Courier as we get more information on this story.

This link has a good video of the Sheriff praising the concealed carry holder.

I feel sad for the woman and her family, but thank God there was someone there to keep it from being worse. The author of the story did a good job noting that the police took about six minutes to arrive. As the old saying goes, when it’s a matter of life and death, seconds count and the police are only minutes away.

A six minute response time by the police is pretty good but he could have done a lot of damage if that was his goal. Who knows?
He probably would have run out of ammunition or targets in that time.

Bad writing in the article.

Gunman entered dentist's office and "shot his wife."

Whose wife? Dentist's wife? Shooter's wife?

It's the gunman's wife.

The dentist lives 4 doors down from a co-worker who also knows the shooter and the woman who was shot. The shooter was a deacon (late 50's, early 60's maybe) and drove a school bus. He was estranged from his wife - they have 3 or 4 kids. The coworker can't believe the shooter did it, said you never would have thought he could do something like that.

Yep. It is Sullivan County. I have been there. Response time would be better if Andy did not stop by Aunt Bea's on the way to work. This county has been featured on something like Southern Justice, a cop show, where the cops arrest family members.

Sad that the woman was killed, but I'm glad it was ended before more harm was done.

Indeed. The kicker for me is the non-witness witness

That happens to me all the time. I figured it was probably something like that. Was just having a bit of fun at your expense Smile

Your post seems to suggest that Sullivan is a podunk small hick county.
With 95 counties in TN, there are only 8 larger in population than Sullivan... now, the hick part might be a different story. Big Grin

Having lived and worked in rural East Tennessee some years back, I think the hick description would be pretty accurate. The Tri Cities area if I recall was the name they gave it. When I lived in Knoxville, they did not yet have liquor by the drink and Cas Walker was the man about town. Coming from a large urban area to East Tennnessee was a cultural shock at that time.

Holy moly, I read a lot about Cas Walker and loved hearing stories about him when we lived near Knoxville! We are in SW VA near the tri-cities now.

Here was Cas's message to 'thugs': Big Grin Big Grin

We're not gonna call the police, they'll just put them in jail for 10 days, we'll work 'em up so they'll be in the hospital for 10 days" Big Grin

We had an eventful day - this morning an inmate escaped when they were transporting him to the courthouse. He somehow slipped his handcuffs and leg cuffs and took off when they opened the van door. The courthouse is about 5 blocks from my office. They caught him after about 30 minutes or so. He was wanted for attempted murder and several other charges.

I am sorry this happened and my sympathy to the deceased woman's family. This incident once again illustrates the fallacy of banning weapons in medical places. In my area, all medical facilities are rife with the signs prohibiting weapons...except by law enforcement.

Of course luckily, the CCW holder in that shooting maybe didn't abey any signs, if there were any.
As the to locale, I've only been in that area 4 times in my life, brother in law/wife moved to Johnson City few years back, he passed away last year. I ended up at the emergency room once at the small hospital at Elizabethon, Scyamore Shoals, and had excellent care there.

But visiting is much different than living in an area.
