My current two Buicks ('64 and '68), I put Tremec 5 speeds in both.
One is a TKO 500 and the other is a TKX.

I drive both as daily, long distance highway and they get 20-22 MPG highway and that is typically +5 posted highway.

The 350/Tremec would be a good car, unless you were "stuck" on "originality". (I am not)

Both of my cars are a blast with the Tremecs, and if I were looking at Gen 1, I would not think twice about buying the one your talking about as you describe it.

I'm thinking the same thing. I have videos, but don;t see it until Saturday. It does seem to good to be true. Guy claims wife is sick and needs cash asap. He could get that just about anywhere. My $$$ aren;t special. He then said what people always say that raise my hair on my arms and neck..."I want it to go to someone that will love it" We'll see. The video he sent and pics show a great condition car and they are date stamped 24hrs before he sent to me. He then face-timed a walk around with me. I interested enough to go see it and have cash ready to transfer.

Stainless line with new booster and disc up front.

Between those two model years I tend to like the '68 a little more if only because of the vent window delete Chevy did for that model year. Dad loved the vent because he was a smoker, but I preferred the cleaner look without it when the '68 came out.

As customary for any car that's been around for almost 60 years, check beneath it for rust anywhere and everywhere, particularly with the frame and the floor. Surface rust isn't that big of a deal but the more chronic stuff can certainly be and become an issue. Original body panels above in good condition is a good sign but not an absolute tell-all of the overall condition of the car. I'd still check for body filler especially if the car has had a respray in its life, particularly along the lower edges of each fender panel and the bottoms and edges of the doors and along the edges of the trunk lid. Also scrutinize the A-pillar and metal quality along the window openings. How's the engine bay look like? The trunk is another place to critically look for signs of rust.

Then of course there's the biggest issue: how does it drive? Clean starting? How does it idle? Any weird noises, either running while sitting or moving on the road? All of the usual stuff when evaluating any used car.

Frankly at that price I would be a bit more cautious of the car's overall condition. It's not absurdly low of a price but low enough to make me wonder if there might be some hidden issues waiting to bite. I don't know what the market's like where you are but around here it's not uncommon to see a very clean, sorted and well presented first generation Camaro with a replacement V8 engine and transmission selling for north of $50k from private sellers.

I have calipers, a paint tester and check-out kit assembled and ready to go. I like that the firewall hasn't been cut. Most that were raced would have had a bigger motor put in at some point and they would have cut her up to do so. It really does look like an awesome deal. We'll see Saturday, when I put my hands on it. My buddy is going with me. He's even more anal about the details than I am. He's an aircraft tech and an aviation inspector with 25yrs experience. Big GM fan like me too.

Nice find... But suggest that you get a qualified person to give it a goooood lookover that will tell you the truth about the cars condition rather than what you want him to tell you.... Even if you have to pay a inspection fee it could be worth it in the long run........ Did the car spend any time where the use of salt/etc on the road surfaces or salty sea air that can cause the undercarriage and body panels to be in need of repair or replacement?????............................ drill sgt.

Yep. If you are not comfortable with looking at the car and your evaluating everything, find out of there is a reputable outfit that specializes in restoration work, and get the owner to agree to take it and you there. Paying for that service would be money well spent.

Buy the car, not the story.

But, with the economy as it is, as folks with these cars get older, and the "Auction Craze/Flipper World" has tapered off, there are quite a few cars bringing much lower prices.

And it will continue. (Cue "The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers)

This guy lives in the sticks. Anyone local to him would likely be a buddy of his. Between my buddy and myself, we can likely get the idea of what is what. At the pricing it's at, I am not opposed to a few things needing mechanical attention or adjusting. Bad frame or drivetrain is probably the only thing that would make me put the brakes on the purchase.

The first car I bought was a 1968 Camaro 327/210 HP with powerglide and air. Later I bought a 1969 SS350 4 speed. I eventually moved to Corvettes but an early Camaro still turns my head. OP, go for it.

I recommend finding your local "cars and coffee" Saturday morning informal car shows.

Make friends, join the clubs, find people you can trust who are NOT pressuring you to buy their car. There are "sharks" swimming around the Cars & Coffee folks looking to devour their $$$ and give them junk. Just because a car looks nice doesn't mean it's a good car.

Take your time, you will gain precious knowledge and "mentors".

Best wishes to you.

Or you could buy a new 2023 or 2024 brand new Camaro with a whole lot more comfort and reliability and performance etc. 2024 LINK CLICK

I do like a hidden headlight model, didn't realize that was a 69, I'd have guessed 68.

For me, though, it'd be an early Nova [62-65], always liked them.

A 70 should've had the split bumper, right?

Have a good restoration shop go over it. 35 grand is a lot of money for that car these days. As sigmonkey said, prices have fallen considerably, these are the baby boomer muscle cars and we get older every day. Smile

I wouldn't consider a car like that without it being a big block. There are a lot of these Camaros out there for sale now. Take your time, look around.

The split bumpers were an RS option, and could be ordered, but most were full, and the signals under the headlights were the standard (so not an RS). Much like Chevelles, there were not as many SS that left the factory, than exist on the road today. A lot of folks added the split bumpers.
(and the grill is 70)

I always preferred the 69. I like the front bumper design.

Those 70 1/2+ split bumper models were pretty sharp too for the next model.

I agree. I also started this saying Big Block only, but this 350 w/Tremec 5sp is looking like such a solid option I may go for that instead. Hope I don't regret it.

396 or 383 stroker was what I really had in mind when I started looking.
