Looks like the case is just finishing up in court. The infractions in question happened 2006-2009. Yes, I do like H & K.

Wait, what? |
4.2 million in fines. That is a dinner tab. In other news, it seems Mexico has a bit of a problem curbing violence within its borders. It seems that corruption is running amuck within its governmental system. Yes, HK broke the rules, but it’s not like they set out to sell guns to criminals. It sounds like Mexico is just...full of criminals. And they wonder why we want a wall. “Remember to get vaccinated or a vaccinated person might get sick from a virus they got vaccinated against because you’re not vaccinated.” - author unknown

This is the same bullshit that screwed SIG in Germany a few years back. It works this way. H&K gets government approval for a sale to the government of another country, in this case Mexico. After the fact, activists bring a civil case in Germany claiming the sale violated German law because the government that bought the firearms has some relationship to violation of German standards on human rights. The case goes against H&K, who eats a fine, or in the SIG case, a prohibition on exporting firearms. The objective is destroying domestic firearms manufacturing in Germany and it's slowly working. I'm not sure what happened in the Hk case. For SIG, I thought it was a SIG contract with the US Government where the entity/country who was going to end up with the guns is "unknown" to the manufacturer? So SIG sold to the US Government, and the US Government passed along the guns. Acquittals, suspended sentences and a f.ine that is essentially a slap on the wrist. Not sure what the legal defense costs were but I'm sure this will somehow add up to an increase in prices for the US market. We pay for everything... In all seriousness - this really could have gone really badly. Glad that it is settled and over. Save the whales. Redeem them for valuable prizes...

It's also the gross receipts from the transaction, according to the HK guy quoted in the article. The transaction went through an federal government buyer in Mexico and was in strict accordance with Mexican federal government policy. The plaintiffs in court raised hell because they said that HK knew some of the weapons would be forwarded to state authorities that the plaintiffs believed were committing human rights abuses. That's why the plaintiffs were willing to wait since 2010; now they've got the German government telling HK to hurry up and disgorge not just the profit from the transaction but everything HK was paid for the transaction. Oh, and there were some allegations (as far as the article established) of bribery in Mexico and Germany.
