HISTORY

During WWII, a Japanese submarine was defeated by an American destroyer that was initially too close to engage with its cannons so threw these tuberous projectiles at the sub’s deckgun crew.

Yes! On April 5, 1943 the USS O'Bannon, during an aborted ramming operation, wound up directly alongside Japanese submarine Ro-34, too close to use their cannons. But the sub had a 75mm deck gun that they began manning. With no other close range weapons, the sailors on the destroyer began throwing the only thing they could find- potatoes. The Japanese mistook the ballistic tubers for grenades and scurried to dispose them overboard, losing enough time for the O'Bannon to reposition itself and bring its real weapons to bear. After sustaining mulptiple hits, the sub was forced to submerge, whereupon it was destroyed completely by depth charges.

Well done. TBIY

Correct! The thief, an employee of the Louvre and an Italian patriot, was caught two years later when he tried to sell it to an Italian museum.
