Until a couple hundred years ago, most people would sleep in two stages, i.e. a first sleep and a second sleep. There would be an hour or two between the two sessions, where people would read, catch up on work, whatever. There is evidence that bi-phasic sleep is more natural, and left to their own device people tend to fall back into this pattern (I personally find this to be very true.)
