Yes, in general leases are not a good financial idea.
However with the current $7500 tax credits and manufacturers wanting to move as many of these EVs as possible lease deals can be quite lucrative.

Currently you can get a Honda Prolouge for under $200 a month. Of course the amount down varies, mileage, etc etc.

I get 10-11 mpg in my Tundra and at $3.00 a gallon give or take I am at $75 per 250 miles. I spend about $200 a month on gas currently.

Using some trusty dusty math. It would cost be about $5 to charge a Honda Prologue for 250 miles.
It’s all around town short trips for me.

Here is where it can/could get even better for me if it is fairly simple to legally transfer a lease from one person to another.

I am on a couple EV groups and it is a couple times every day someone is posting about how they are stuck in a 3 year lease because they did ZERO research on what is needed to actually charge the vehicle.
They just saw $4-5k down and $200 a month. Now they are home with their new vehicle and their landlord tells them sorry you can’t have a charger installed or they have an electrician come to the house to install a charger and financially adding a charger to their current setup is way out of their ability to pay.
So they are stuck using local chargers they have to drive to and pay a ton to charge, wait in line only to find the chargers broken.

None of these things are an issue for me. My electricity is cheap! My good buddy is an electrician and I have plenty of juice to my current system, and my electrical box is literally right next to where I would be parking the vehicle.
I can have a Tesla universal charger installed parts and labor for under $700.

So, I am thinking if it is possible to take over someone’s lease and get everything in my name I offer them $1-2k cash and just take over the payments.

I now have a brand new car at the not much more than what I am saving in gas a month by not driving the Tundra all the time.
Saves wear and tear on my truck. While I love my truck, most of the time I am just carting these boys to school and sports.
Truck is nice but not needed all the time. Still need the truck when we go to the cabin and the like. It’s paid off so no real reason to get rid of it since I’ll still be using it.

I go to Cincy a bunch and would likely still take the truck (gas cost with Cincy trips is beyond my $200 a month gas cost I mentioned earlier). The Prolouge says it gets like 270 miles. Cincy and back is 200 so in real world use that would be cutting it close without having a level 2 charger at my Mom’s up there as the level 1 portable charger charges at something like 1 mph give or take and it is usually just day trips up their. So might add 8 miles for the time I am up there.

So, not really a bad plan if transferring a lease is doable and not terribly difficult.

How much would insurance be on the Honda?

Let’s say $1,000 a year. Let’s say you pay $2,000 to transfer the lease and $700 for the charger. It’ll cost you $4,700 to save $4,800 in gas if you get two years worth of the lease. That’s not including the opportunity cost on $3,200 you would pay up front on the Honda.

I suspect that the only entity that can answer your question is the lessor of the vehicle. Expect to have to pay fees for the transfer plus incidental expenses like origination charge, credit check, warranty transfer/extension, vehicle inspection, etc. The current lessee will also probably have to pay a fee for early cancellation.

The leasing agency should be fine with it as they get paid twice for a single risk.

Bottom line, a lease transfer is possible, but it will cost you. Maybe more than a new vehicle from a dealer.

I don’t get in the pedal much.
Lifted, 33” extremely aggressive off-road tires, full skid plates, lots of idling and short trips. Zero highway driving.
Just part of the game.
Not worried about mileage.

Just noticing how many folks did zero research before getting their EV and would like out. Not worth it for me to initiate a new lease.
But if it were possible for me to just take someone else’s without a bunch of costs would be worth it.

I would not mind a smaller 2nd car even if it costs a little bit a month.
Insurance is not that expensive here. I barely even pay $1000 a year for our current 3 vehicles. The Honda would add like $56 a month and I could drop my Tundra to a lower mileage use vehicle saving a bit a month on it.

Tundras eat brakes so that would be a savings too especially for me since most of my driving is two lane curvy roads.
With an EV and regenerative braking would be helpful.

Granted I am not looking at a wash. But if all in minus $200 in gas and I am spending $150 a month more than I am now but have a 2nd vehicle I am good with those numbers.

Most leases are done through automakers bank, some do allow for leases to be taken over.
The person wanting to take over has to qualify.
For most people that qualify for a lease, it’s easier just to get a new one from a dealer.

Depending on the state you're in, the taxes they add on to that advertised lease payment can easily double the amount. In AZ you'll pay sales tax and the vehicle licensing tax. And whatever they say is "due at inception" or in the OP's case the transfer, divide all that by the number of months you'll have it and it will a lot more than $200/mo.

For what the op described as around town driving and charging at home an EV will definitely save you tons of money. My costs so far with some Supercharging thrown in is running about 50% less than my suv.
Also, your utility company might reimburse you for the charger installation. Mine did and the costs to me were $0.00

I thought about leasing a Tesla. Monthly cost was attractive. Insurance was not. My current insuror wanted $1864 per year for the Tesla, including a rider to bridge the gap between vehicle value and lease payoff, in the event of a total.

I do want to find a way to EV. Deals are done 2 Jan 25, supposedly.
