I'm starting to learn songs again and while I have a couple of stereo receivers/amplifiers I do not have a set of speakers. I'm looking for something that I can tuck out of the way, or hang on the wall. I don't need audiophile quality, but decent enough that I can pick out nuances. I can throw a few bucks at it but I don't want to go crazy. I haven't bought such a thing in over 25 years so I don't even know what's out there.

What's a decent enough, small and full range speaker set?

I'm a bit confused. Do you want a set of stereo speakers that you hook up to a music player (mp3, iPad, phone, etc.)? Or do you want speakers that you can use from an instrument amplifier?

Is Bluetooth an option? I have a Bose Soundlink Mini II. But it's not a pair. I also have a Bang & Olufsen Beoplay A2 speaker which can be made into stereo by adding a second.

Those are a bit pricey. If you want stereo speakers that also can serve as instrument speakers, you might look into the Blackstar Fly 3.

Small won’t do “full range” without a subwoofer. Not sure what your music source is planned to be. If Bluetooth, then a pair of Cambridge Soundworks OontZ 3 Pro Edition should do the trick. $129 the pair, and wil give left/right separation...

If you’re going to use one of your receivers, there’s the Audioengine A+2, the PSB Alphas. If you want WiFi/Bluetooth connectivity that is a different set up but happy to help if that’s where you’re going.

If you're looking for small bookshelf speakers, I recommend M Audio.

I second the AudioEngine A2+, or if you want something a little bigger the A5+.
Audiophile sound quality, bluetooth or hard-wired connectivity, great reviews, great company.
Note that their usual speakers have a built-in amplifier and a volume control on the front.

The older A2 has the same sound quality but without Bluetooth connectivity. I have a pair I’m not using and would consider selling. I also have a pair of A5’s (not +’s) that are packed away, as I’m using their HD6 in my system now.

I don’t know if they still make them but Infinity made a great pair of bookshelf speakers. Solid wood cabinets, well insulated and very fine electronics. I had a pair for almost 30 years.

Sorry. My post made sense in my head but upon rereading I see what you mean. I actually have a Blackstar BEAM. Great for practice but I'm looking for something to hear while I'm playing my other amps.

I want a set of wired, passive stereo speakers that I can use with my decent Onkyo receiver. Nothing Bluetooth. I'll most likely hook up my old iMac to it but also want to spin some vinyl records, too. I'll check out the links.

That was one of my thoughts, too but I didn't know if they still make them or of its just another company that's riding the name they built years ago while putting out lower quality stuff these days.

Thanks everyone. The Klipsch, PBS and Audioengine speakers look good.

Maybe their HDP6 speakers are what I'm looking for.

Last year, I bought a pair a pair of Micca RB42 speakers for my living room. The main criteria were passive, small size, and good sound. I'm pleased, especially for the small size. I paid approx. $150 for the pair.

See if Altec lansing still makes an eight inch three way. I have a pair of these as my rear satellite speakers, and they sound excellent.

Otherwise look at Klipsh speakers as I am sure they make a nice six or eight inch speaker that would suit you.

I hung my Altec Lansings from the ceiling using a mesh material picked up at the fabric store.

Mark, I really like my AudioEngine HD6 speakers. They look good, have a great built-in Class A/B amp, have RCA, mini-phone and TOSLINK digital and Bluetooth Apt-X Hd Inputs. Output for subwoofer.

I have them mounted on wall mounts either side of our flat-screen TV, with wiring hidden behind drywall; my repair is pretty invisible.

Have you looked at the myriad of Nearfield Monitors for studio use?

Yamaha, Genelec, Tannoy, KRK, JBL, Mackie, and so on...? They range in price from a few hundred a pair to thousands. Lots of good choices across the budget spectrum.

That may be the best path to take. They're usually designed to not color the sound and may help if I get into recording again.

Do you run these full range or with a sub?

I have a set of Emotiva bookshelf speakers in addition to surrounds, center and atmos speakers that they sell. I have had them for about 8 years in my main listening/tv area and have been very happy with the sound. They are 4 ohm so a fairly competent amp is needed to drive them.

I found this video very informative regarding amp power, speaker efficiency and impedence.

They are self-powered, but I bought a pair of Adam Audio T5V nearfield monitors about a year ago, both for listening to music and to play digital modeling guitar equipment through.

For a $199/each bookshelf-sized two-way speaker with a 5" woofer, they sound spectacular.

They consistently show up on "best studio monitors under $1000" lists.
