My 7 year old Apple Cinema Display is acting weird and going black periodically. I'm sure it's on it's last legs.

With the discontinuation of the ACD, I'm faced with a new purchase decision and know nothing about other brands of monitors. What works well when tied to an iMac?

Thanks

Any HDMI-capable monitor, connected with a DisplayPort-HDMI dongle should work fine.

I'm typing this on an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015) that has a second monitor attached with a DisplayPort cable, it is an ASUS PB287Q I bought back in Nov 2016. For the first six months or so, I used the connection method mentioned in the previous paragraph, but I needed the dongle for another Mac (a Mini that has a different ASUS HDMI monitor connected).

ASUS monitors are not particularly special quality-wise, perhaps better than average, certainly not at the level of a Cinema Display, but they are "good enough" and a very good value.

I run 2 non-Mac monitors and have for 10+ years through my Mac Mini. Currently I have a ViewSonic 24" and a DELL 27"... both bought from Costco for less than $129 ea. I always look for a Demo monitor on sale.

I think I have the same ASUS monitor for my MacMini. Works fine, just not pretty (the body, not the screen).

My 27" monitor went black a couple years ago. I just used a 32" HDMI TV as my monitor. It's not as hi-res as an actal monitor, but it works fine.

And new monitors run a good $600, so I elected to put that into a new laptop instead, and still use the TV as my 'second' monitor.
