In NY you have to apply for and be approved for a permit to own a handgun. Each time you purchase a new handgun you bring the store or FFL receipt to the county pistol permit office and register the new handgun, then you can go back to the dealer and take possession. I just saw on the news that the Erie County pistol permit office will be closed until further notice starting tomorrow. Nobody in Erie County NY will be able to register or take possession of a new handgun until the office opens again.

It was my sad misfortune to have in-laws who lived in Cattaraugus Co.
To all who live in New Yorkistan, you have my deepest condolences.

I hate that for you. Down here we just go to the store and buy one and fill out the 4473 or do a private sale.

You mean its not like that everywhere? Whats with registering your gun? Why would you do that?

I remember a while back, maybe 15 or so years ago, when a poster on this or the other one Para owned, who was driving from NY to TX. He wanted to know what states he could have a hand gun in on his trip. So someone came in and said don't believe internet posters, call the state police in each state he was going to drive in. Sound advice.

So he called the KY state police. The guy answering the phone said sure, every one else here had one, why shouldn't you?

Guess the south starts at the Ohio River (owned by KY). It pays to be polite here. An armed society is a polite society. No, we wouldn't want you here, but you can move to FL or TX. Here, if a politician mentions gun control, we all just vote against him/her. Guess TX is turning blue because so many voters lack sense.

You should contact the Second Amendment Foundation.

That might be fertile grounds for challenging the constitutionality of the NYS permit program.

Didn’t we have a thread around here to stock up during the glut?

No reason to be scrambling right now.

I was at work one day, and a lady came into the lobby wanting to speak with an officer. I went out to speak with her, and she said she needed the paperwork to "register her guns." I asked her what she meant, and she explained that she was moving to the city from out of state (New Jersey I believe) and needed to get the registration forms. I informed her that we didn't do that in Kentucky. She acted like she didn't quite believe me and left a bit confused.

Beside the point. The point is the Constitution is being trampled to save us from a virus that most everyone will survive anyways. And th e abuses will get worse.

Some people are ignoring it because of the media “you don’t get it it’s not the flu we’re all going to die” hype.

The mayor of Champaign IL also passed an emergency resolution that allows her to, among other things (pretty scary list of "powers" she has now), stop gun and ammunition sales. Im not sure If thats what happened, or if she's just holding that card for future exploitaion.

Never let it be said that a Democrat American Socialist Party Member ever passed up a chance to exploit a crisis for political advantage, like chipping away at the Constitution.

Erie County clerk closing auto bureaus, suspending passport and pistol permit services through March 31

By Harold McNeil
Published March 17, 2020|Updated March 17, 2020

Effective Wednesday, Erie County will close its auto bureau at the Eastern Hills Mall because of the coronavirus crisis, and the remaining facilities will close effective 5 p.m. Friday. All the bureaus will be closed through March 31, according to the Erie County Clerk's Office.

The locations open through Friday will offer limited services.

Only Erie County residents with scheduled appointments or those with essential business will be permitted inside.

Only these services will be provided: commercial driver’s license testing, those who have to pay a civil fine to reinstate their license, a license renewal approaching before the end of March, license plate surrenders, and vehicle registrations, including renewals. There will be no learner’s permit testing, reciprocity transactions or duplicate titles. Only those conducting business will be permitted inside.

The mobile sites and Evans Town Hall location have already been closed.

The Clerk's Office will decide by March 31 whether to re-open the bureaus.

The office has also suspended issuance of passports as of Wednesday. This is effective through March 31.

The office will also close the pistol permit office at the courthouse and the mobile sites at Elma on Fridays and Cheektowaga on Mondays, also effective through March 31.

This makes me sad as I grew up in OP. It was during the 70s so it was bad times, but it was still a great place. My kids ask me why I wouldn't want to live there and this thread is the perfect example.

I haven't had time to dig around yet, I'm still working, but I'm sure this will come up in the fight. It doesn't affect me, I'm well set, but from what I'm told Cabelas had a three hour wait for background checks last evening. Anyone buying a handgun won't be picking it up soon.
